~CAITLYN~

Caitlyn sat down on the steps leading to the double doors of her large house. Her parents were inside, probably getting ready to go to bed or eat. Sometimes one gets ready for bed, and the other eats alone with Caitlyn. Depends on the schedule.

"Hey, Caitlyn." A voice called from the door. Caitlyn turned around to see the light bleed out from the house. "Dinner's ready."

She looked behind to see her father was standing there. "I'm not hungry..." She told her father .

"You're not? Is something wrong?"

The shadowy figure's shadow disappeared as Caitlyn's father sat down next to her. He placed his hand on her shoulder. "You can always tell me if something is on your mind."

"I know, but I'm not sure how..."

"It must be something bad enough for you to be sitting out in the cold like this, eh?"

"It's not bad... You just might have a bad reaction to it that I am not exactly prepared for."

"Would you like to talk to both me and your mother or am I so special?"

Caitlyn giggled and looked at her father. "Don't worry, dad. You're on my special people list. I was going to tell you individually... You know how mum likes to overreact."

"Oh, yes..." Her father said looking down, probably thinking of many times his wife has gone a little overboard. "Yes, she does..."

"Remember that one time I told her I became friends with Vi?"

"Yes. You know how she is with people from the Southside."

"Isn't grandpa from there?"

"Yes, but she doesn't have to know that... We should save her the embarrassment for a more proper time."

Caitlyn looked down at her nails, which had been bitten down. "I hate having awkward conversations..."

"No, no, it's not awkward." Her father said.

"I've noticed that we've never talked about dating or anything... I could never talk about it with mum, she would try to tell my story."

"She gets carried away..."

"I'm not so sure how you deal with her sometimes..."

"What on earth do you mean?"

"I mean, with her attitude. How she talks to us at times."

"When your mother and I were younger, she wasn't like that. She was actually similar to you in a way."

"I find that hard to believe... she's like a fly that keeps buzzing around my ear sometimes."

"Your mother wasn't the greatest, most proper person when we were younger."

"Oh my god, dad... did I just hear you say mum was... cool?"

He let out a small laugh. "Sure. You could say that."

"Let me stop you before you get into depth and cause me to projectile vomit all over these steps."

"Graphic, and I was not going to do that. That would be rude and... quite disgusting."

"Dad."

"Sorry..."

Caitlyn swallowed before continuing the conversation. "Caitlyn, are you with someone?" Her father asked.

"Maybe..." Caitlyn answered, sort of smiling.

"So, that's what you're worried about?"

"Well, sort of... I'm actually worried about who... I have my future planned out, you know this."

"I'm sure that whoever he is, he's alright."

He. That was the problem. It wasn't a problem. Vi wasn't a problem. She never would be. The problem was Caitlyn not being able to get the courage to tell her father that he is a she.

"Well, I mean..." Caitlyn began searching for the correct words. "Most girls like me would picture a perfect little family of four. A husband and two children. A boy and a girl. Ask them, I'm sure they will tell you."

"Where is this going?" Her father asked with a confused look on his face.

"I guess I'm saying that I don't picture my future like that. I don't picture my future with... a husband. I picture my future with a wife..."

"Oh..."

Oh? Oh, no... oh... That's all he said. Oh.

"'Oh'?" Caitlyn looked at her father nervously. "Was that a good 'oh' or a bad 'oh'?" She asked.

"I'm not so sure..." The man said, scratching at his beard. "Does your mother know?"

Caitlyn shook her head. "I can't be alone with her when I tell her either."

"Jayce?"

"Yes, um- I-I think he knew before I did..."

"Are you going to tell her like you told me?"

"I'd rather just walk in and say 'Hey, mum, I'm gay' then leave..."

"I wouldn't do that. You know your mother, even though she's one of the smartest people we both know, you have to explain simple things to her."

"I wish it were so simple though, dad..." Caitlyn mumbled, fidgeting with her fingers. She noticed her father sort of zone out in thought.

"Can I ask if you're dating someone?" He asked a little awkwardly.

"That would be the part where mum would come over the table and possibly rip my face off." Caitlyn said as her father looked at her and gave a nervous giggle.

"Heh, no-no, she... would possibly do that- it depends. Who is it?"

"Will you get upset if I tell you who it is?"

"No... depends on who..."

"It's Vi." Caitlyn squinted her eyes shut and blurted the words out.

"I assumed." Her father said as she began to feel relieved. "You'll have to tell your mother eventually." Her heart started racing again and so did her thoughts. Then her father shrugged his shoulders and rested his hand on hers. "It's a Monday... If you tell your mother tonight, it will for sure feel like one."

Caitlyn giggled to herself. "No, I wasn't going to."

"Don't hold off though, you know you have to tell her."

"I wasn't. Me and Vi have only been dating for a week."

"Usually relationships your age would only last a couple of days."

She smiled and looked around. She felt a little bit of warmth flood to her cheeks. "This is different, dad."

~A FEW DAYS LATER~

Caitlyn's mother was talking to her father about her day at work while Caitlyn herself was thinking of a conversation to bring up. Not that one... maybe she was holding off. Usually, Caitlyn wouldn't leave the table without a conversation, but this time she did.

"Hey, where are you going?" Her mother asked as she turned to face her. "You haven't said anything, is everything alright?"

"Peachy..." Caitlyn said, taking her plate into the kitchen and rinsing it off. She walked back through the dining room before turning around. "Mum, I'm gay and I'm dating Vi, sweet dreams." She said before practically running upstairs.

"What?!" She heard her mother shout from downstairs.
