The last member of the Clan of Time

Rhea knew this feeling to the core of her body, but she knew she would never get used to it...

Being an spectator of the world... always left her with a feeling of emptiness. A feeling of vulnerability, no, impotence of being the eye of the Heavens on Earth but also being the gates of Hell. Having the knowledge of seven billion people yet not being able to do anything with it because it was so immense she remembered everything yet nothing at the same time.

She remained sprawled on her bed, emptily staring at the ceiling in all her messy and exhausted glory; her right hand hung from the edge of the bed, while her left one covered one of her eyes. As always, at this specific time, unknown memories ran through her mind just to get stored at the back of her unconscious, things that will happen or happened, she didn't know anymore as it was a mix of both. Rhea could hear the mix of voices inside her mind: everyone speaking in unison, as if it was a browser with thousands of opened windows, each of them playing different songs and pages. It always felt like she was going deaf.

But in reality, silence engulfed the room, apart from the usual ticking of her eyes and her shallow breathing, there was nothing. It was that same feeling of nothingness, that same pain from that night... appearing to be death's embrace was just the crushing weight of time downing on her mind functions.

After the usual minute, she felt her soul returning to her body in a gust of fresh air.

Rhea let out a muffled groan, squirming a little bit before gripping on her chocolate brown hair. The pounding headache made her remain still on her position, pressing her eyes closed shut for maybe another minute as the pain gave away. She slowly opened her eyes, blinking in attempt to adjust to the city's nightlights again, and the soft blue glow they gave to the room.

As always she questioned herself why was she doing this, why was she destroying herself physically and mentally. She could let the world burn just so she could rest, even if it was for a brief minute... but she didn't. What was her motive? What kept her going?

Why did she always forget?

There was a knock on her bedroom's door, taking her out of her trance. She perked her head softly up, her vision trembling as she tried focusing on the door, that slowly opened, revealing an elderly woman with short white hair and warm sage green eyes. There she was. The only person that kept her sane and protected.

"Ah.. dear... is it over yet?" She quietly asked, trying not to worsen the already pounding headache she knew Rhea was having.

The younger woman sat up on the bed with the help of her elbows and smiled weakly at Alessa Costas, as always, she felt bad for briefly forgetting her existence in these situations. "Yes, it is, ma'am."

Mrs. Costas then fully entered the room, but didn't turn on the light to disturb her further. "I brought you some tea, child. It will help you" the beverage's aromatic properties were quick to fill the room further and further as the woman slowly approached Rhea and carefully sat down on the edge of her bed, handing her the cup along with a small porcelain plate underneath. "Careful, it might be hot"

Rhea smiled softly and nodded, sipping on the slightly sweet liquid and feeling her insides warming up by it. "Thanks, Mrs. Costas."

She smiled back at the younger one and fixed her fluffy and warm robe. "No problem, Rhea." She said, looking at her as she slowly drank the tea, the room was softly lit by downtown's night lights that didn't bother her. "I've got some news, do you want to hear them now? Or do you want me to tell you after you've rested?" Her voice was slightly raspy due to her age, yet it held that homely feeling that Rhea was used to since she took her in.

"Nah, please tell me now. My mind won't get any fresher than right now, you know?" Rhea joked and chuckled, making Mrs. Costas smile warmly, the creases around her eyes accentuating.

"Seems like I've raised you with my same sense of humor, hm?" Mrs. Costas said, pinching her nose softly.

Rhea shrugged her nose in answer and stretched her smile. "Indeed you have."

"Now" Mrs. Costas began, accommodating her hand on Rhea's cheek. "It's something regarding your family"

The brunette frowned. "My family?" the older woman nodded and retrieved her hand.

And like that, the atmosphere became dense.

"Rhea, dear..." she began, making Rhea's face contort into raw confusion, her already damaged mind trying to understand where she was going. "Your Clan's extinction is being discussed by the higher ups at Tokyo."

"Ah.." she said and visibly relaxed, leaning back on the bed's headboard, holding the half empty cup of tea by her legs, she shrugged her shoulders in disinterest. "I thought they had already done that"

Mrs. Costas rose her chin a little bit, looking at her with that same stern stare she used to give her where she first took her in. "You cannot let them do that, Rhea."

"Why not?" Rhea asked, without any attempt to anger or defy her, it was just a curious and disinterested question.

"Because of the simple fact that you inherited your family's cursed techniques and dooms. You are a Kairos. You are part of the Clan of Time, Rhea.

You need to make yourself known, and claim your spot as head of your Clan."

Hello and thanks for reading this first chapter, I hope you enjoyed reading it!

It might be a little slow, and like, having no sense whatsoever, but I promise it will click together soon.

I've always had difficulties with writing the first chapters, so any advice will be deeply appreciated :,) but I also believe this one turned out quite nicely!

Thanks again!
