It was raining when she took out the plastic gloves from her bag. Casually, she sank into the armchair that had already fulfilled its purpose and was ready to be discarded. Her eyes glanced up at the clock, slowly ticking on the wall above the bed, which was large enough to make space for four people.

She knew by experience that it would take the police at least ten minutes to get to the crime scene, maybe fifteen if she was lucky. After all, the elevator was broken, and the stairs were steep. Moreover, the apartment was on the fifth floor.

She closed her eyes and focused on the sound of raindrops pattering against the window. The tranquility leaned into a sense of harmony and transported her to another place, another time.

As soon as she could hear police cars approaching, she reluctantly snapped out of the reverie and crouched down next to the body. She tilted her head and met the empty gaze. It was a shame that the young man had just recently earned his first million and hadn't had a chance to spend the money before she took his life. The bullet was still lodged in his forehead between his bushy eyebrows. Killing the targets with a gun was neither fun nor exciting. Another ruthless murderer would argue that it was a quick way to finish the job, but it wasn't good enough for her. It was rather the reactions the moment they realized the power she held that gave her the adrenaline rush she deeply craved.

But when it boiled down to the thousands of dollars she was offered as compensation, she always made sure to follow the instructions, as long as they didn't deceive her. She wasn't dumb and therefore she never underestimated the leaders of the gangs. It was best not to make too many enemies as a woman in her position.

She let one of her hands touch the outline of blood around the head and rose to her feet. Then she dragged it alongside the wall in a perfect arc.

The police would be infuriated at the sight of the initial they were familiar with from before. The mere thought of their pathetic desperation excited her, and she would've gladly stayed just to witness their faces turn into pure frustration, but she had no time to waste.

The wet gloves were folded into half and carefully put down in her bag before she crossed the bedroom in soiled crocs. Fortunately, pushing open the window with her elbow didn't require much effort. Afterward, she began to climb down, using the drainpipe for support. The rain would wash away any DNA that had stuck to the facade of the building, and she was always careful not to leave traces on the inside.

She landed with ease on the ground and watched as an empty pack of cigarettes was taken by the wind. As soon as she opened her mouth, the chilly autumn air filled her lungs. Escaping was ridiculously easy. The police were nothing but a bunch of idiots.

Moving forward, she would collect her reward, head to a cafe in town and order a well-deserved cup of coffee. Perhaps she'd even turn on the news in the evening just to get the confirmation of her competence.

She started the car and out of the corner of her eye, she observed the police prepare for intervention. It didn't matter.

When they found the body, Charmey was already far away.
