Beneath the shade of a maple tree, Anna settles down on her favorite orange and cream gingham picnic blanket. The gentle breeze tousles her long strawberry-blonde hair as she meticulously opens her favorite book. Captivated by the words on the page, Anna barely notices the dark shadow cast before her until someone says, "Excuse me, miss?"
Looking up, Anna finds a tall bearded man in sunglasses and a baseball cap gesturing to her feet. Heat spreads across her freckled cheeks as she sets her book down and grabs the soccer ball that narrowly misses her legs.
"Here you go," Anna chimes as she tosses the ball back to the stranger.
"Thank you, miss." His accent, although unfamiliar to her, is sharp and cheerful. Anna watches as he heads over to his friend near the dock. His friend catches her gaze and waves. Anna giggles and waves back. Her focus returns to the pages after the two men make their way onto the dock.
In a blink of an eye, a few hours have passed and the sun begins to set. Anna's stomach grumbles a song of hunger and she reluctantly sets the book down. She rummages through her picnic basket for her food and wine.
"Hey, do you want to watch the sunset with us?" The deep accent startles her.
"Shit!" Anna practically jumps out of her skin. She turns to find the stranger and his friend towering over her.
"I was just about to eat-" Anna rushes out.
"You can eat with us over at the dock! I'm Jolly and this is my friend Nick." Jolly gestures to Nick.
"Nice to meet you both, my name is Anna." Anna rises to shake both of their hands but Jolly pulls her into an embrace instead. "You smell like oranges, cinnamon, and a hint of vanilla."
"Sorry about him." Nick rolls his eyes. "He's not from around here."
"It's ok, I don't mind hugs." Anna grins back at Nick.
"May I?" Nick takes a step closer.
"Of course," Anna closes the distance to hug Nick.
"So what brings you both to the lake?" Anna asks as she packs up her picnic basket.
"Fishing," Nick grins as he grabs Anna's book and picnic basket. Jolly grabs the rolled-up blanket.
"It is the perfect day for fishing that's for sure." Anna muses as takes twice as many strides to keep pace with Jolly and Nick.
"You fish?!" Nick stops dead in his tracks. Anna laughs softly turning to Nick.
"I haven't fished in years since my dad moved away and got remarried."
