THE MOONS ETHEREAL GLOW FEEL UPON MAE'S FACE, the silver shield loomed large in the dark sky. Her forehead rested against the bay window as she looked up at the fulgent night sky, an antiquarian, heavy book lay open upon her outstretched legs. She noticed its burgundy edges beginning to fade in the moon's light, from decades worth of use.

Lorenzo's muffled snores, and the rhythmic ticking from the grandfather clock filled the silence in the room. Lorenzo lay on his side, his bare back facing the younger woman. The tan glow of his skin was accentuated by the soft light of the full moon streaming through the window.

With Mae's insomniac tendencies she found it difficult to fall asleep that night, her restless body tossing and turning before she sauntered over to the window. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and worries, exacerbated by the looming prospect of her first day at school that following morning. The restlessness of her body mirrored the turmoil in her mind, driving her to seek refuge by the window in hopes of finding some semblance of peace.

As Mae's cerulean eyes gazed up at the luminous full moon hanging in the night sky. Her thoughts drifted back to the encounter with the mysterious woman from the day before, her presence lingering in Mae's mind like a haunting melody. The memory of their meeting played over and over in Mae's thoughts, leaving her with a sense of unease and curiosity that refused to fade away.

Despite being aware of the societal norms and expectations that deemed her thoughts towards another woman as sinful and taboo, Mae couldn't help but be captivated by the allure of the enigmatic figure. The internal conflict between her ingrained beliefs and the undeniable pull of curiosity and fascination created a sense of unease within her.

She struggled with the conflicting emotions, knowing that her infatuation with the older woman would be met with disapproval and judgement from the conservative villagers, especially from her own parents.

Lost in her thoughts, Mae abruptly jolted back to reality by a muffled voice that pierced through the silence. She had been so consumed by her contemplation of the older woman that she hadn't noticed her husband stirring across from her, his words unintelligible as he reached out in search for his wife.

Closing the thick book Mae placed it delicately on top of a nearby dresser. She moved with utmost caution, tiptoeing towards the bed where Lorenzo lay peacefully back to sleep. She didn't want to disturb his slumber, knowing how important rest was for him. Gently slipping under the covers, Mae welcomed the warmth it provided, nestling herself closer to Lorenzo.

As sleep gradually overcame her, the allure of the captivating, mysterious woman filled Mae's dreams, adding an extra layer of fascination to her slumber.

Mae's serene slumber was abruptly shattered by the thrill melody of her cell phone, a stark contrast to the tranquil oasis of her bedroom. The pulsating ache in her head intensified with each piercing chime, reluctantly, she opened her heavy eyelids and reached for the offending device, the caller ID ignored in her state of disorientation.
