As night fell, gut instinct told me more was afoot with this gang. So I doubled back to the courtyard in black fatigues, blending into shadows. Spotting an old storage box, I squeezed inside and waited...

Around midnight, hushed voices approached. Flicking the latch, I peered through rusty slits to see the two thugs hunkered down with a third. Their ringleader judging by his sneer.
"...told ya I didn't kill 'im. Just a flesh wound. Now he's a problem we gotta solve permanent-like." My blood ran cold at the targeting of one of my brother blue.
I kicked open the door with a roar, dropping all three in a flash before they knew what hit 'em. "Not on my watch, scumbags!" Cuffing them up revealed a note on the leader: "He is not dead yet."
A cop was fighting for his life out here somewhere due to my failure to finish the job. No time for booking - I dragged the thrice-damned trio into my cruiser.
"Where is he?!" I demanded, brandishing my pistol. Seeing that look in my eyes, the leader knew resisting was futile. And with that, a race against time began on the dark streets of my city...
As we tore through shadowy alleys following these lowlifes' directions, my mind reeled. Who was the target - another brother in blue, or some criminal I'd put away?
Finally stopping at a condemned apartment complex, my gut sank. That's where the lawyer had holed up, evading justice for too long. Rushing inside with weapon drawn, I heard faint shouts up the stairs.
Bursting through the door, my fist connected with the thug standing over the lawyer's bloodied form. He crumpled without a sound as I turned to the injury. Multiple stab wounds but still clinging to life.
"Hang in there," I told him firmly, applying pressure with my bare hands. Over the years we'd butted heads as adversaries, but no one deserved to die like an animal. Sirens wailed in the distance as backup closed in.
Securing the last thug, I turned back to see the lawyer staring up with glassy eyes. "Always...one...step...ahead..." he croaked with a cough of scarlet. And with that, his ruined body finally succumbed to its injuries.
Justice ultimately wasn't meant for him in this life. But that's what happens when you spend your days making enemies of dangerous men in our city's dark corners. Another gruesome reminder that even we lawmen live on the edge of a knife out here...
After closing out the grizzly case, I took some personal time to process it all over whiskey at my local haunt. The lawyer's death weighed heavily, even if we were adversaries - no man deserved that end.
More drinks fueled reflection on this gritty life I'd chosen, protecting a city rotted to its core by greed and violence. How many more good men would fall before we finally turned the tide? It was a bleak thought.
Shaking my head to clear the turbulent emotions, I paid my tab and stepped out into the hot night. Sirens scream in the distance as always, a reminder the patrols never sleep. But then - an all too familiar voice from the shadows.
"Well well, if it isn't Detective Smith. Fancy meeting you here..." I whirled to find Vasco leaning casual against my squad car, flanked by familiar masked faces. They must have followed me from the precinct...
Hand drifting to my piece, I sized up the three of them coolly. "Boys, you really don't wanna do this. Walk away while you still can." But they just chuckled, already too far gone in whatever harebrained scheme fueled their rage tonight.
So be it. If it was a street rumble they wanted, they'd get one. I'd face any number to protect this city. "Alright fellas, you asked for it..."
Vasco and his goons started fanning out to flank me, hands drifting meaningfully to concealed weapons. I kept my hands away from my sidearm, projecting calm. No need to further provoke men already itching for violence.
"Last chance to walk away, Vasco. You don't want another stint upstate," I warned sternly, noting the ringleader's twitchy eyes darting for an opening. He was straight-up frothing for payback at this point it seemed.
"Shoulda left me to rot in that cell, copper. Now me and the boys are gonna -" Before he could finish, I launched into preemptive action, tackling the closest thug in a fluid wrestling takedown.

His pistol skittered away as we grappled fiercely on the pavement. Out of the corner of my eye, Vasco drew down shakily on me in a rage. But he lacked the mettle for a true kill shot.
Kicking the subdued goon off, I whipped my own weapon on the frenzied criminal with laser focus. "Stand down now, Vasco, before you do something regrettable..." My tone brokered no argument this time. The law had him dead to rights.
His breathing came hard and shallow as fight or flight instincts warred within. But slowly, shakily, his hands raised in reluctant surrender once more. These streets would know peace for one more night, thanks to one cop's resolve against the dark.
