I tried to lighten the mood of the home and drove into the nearest town to pick up some house supplies , including some new lightbulbs. The current ones keep turning off randomly. Every time I enter the bathroom and close the door, the lights in the hallway just dies. I know their just old but I feel as if some presence quickly leaves as the light from the bathroom emits into the hallway. Maybe I'm just too tired from the situation.
The first night was really difficult to get though. The emptiness of the place made me paranoid. The heat was uncomfortable, and the bed was way too hard. It felt like sleeping on dried out cow skin. I had a nightmare also. I saw a horrific image of the dead criminal standing right at my door. He had a mask on but you could see the hole of which the bullet pierced. There was fresh blood still dripping from the head. The body was just silent and still... Like a mannequin. In my dream I shouted and shouted but it was useless. I was alone in the dark. The standing corpse was just watching me.... It's face was expressionless from the mask... Just a corpse that seemed to be alive but wasn't.
I woke up with my heart pumping and my head pulsing. Sweat was dropping down my face as usual. I looked to the corner of my eye and almost caught the sight of a room with its lights on. Just as I turned my head the room across the hallway was dark. I was furious. I didn't know why I kept seeing things. Was it the heat ? Was it just the horrible events at the bank ? I don't know why. I need to see another familiar face as soon as possible. It's only been one night and I'm already hating the place.
A few more days past. Just the same routine that I've been doing ever since I got to the house. Wake up , eat, clean, head to town, head back, eat, shower, sleep. It's not exactly Netflix and pizza but I don't have many options. There is a very low internet connection and the service out here is usually at two bars at max. Officer Morse recently called in and told me he was coming to visit soon. I told him that the place isn't exactly natural. It gives me a really bad feeling and I keep seeing things. He just told me to calm down like any other person would and to just hang on until he gets there.
Officer Morse was a tall and heavy African American police officer. He had a problem with his previous employer. He moves town to town looking for various jobs that involve security and protection. He landed a job here in St. Mary's and has kept his job as a police officer for a while now. He barley has a family, just like me. On the day of his visit I cleaned the house good and bought a case of beer.
"I'm on duty boy, I can't accept this, but thank you anyways" he said. "I'm sorry heheh what am I thinking.. oh... uh..Have you gotten closer to finding that guy?" I said with loose but desperate attitude.
"I'm sorry boy but we're still investigatin'. This guy managed to hack into the surveillance systems before he entered the bank. The snake had a crew with him that specialized in quite a few tactics, from demolition, to hackin' to, to impersonations. So far we were able to capture one of his crew members. He's currently being interrogated , but shows no sign of cooperation. Say, how are you holding up ? You okay with the house so far? What's this about you seein' things at night? There's not a soul for miles!"
"Like I said on the phone, there's something about this house... This place. I don't understand why I can't just be relocated somewhere within a town with other people." I said.
"Your relocation was the best we could do. I mean if there were more safe areas in the city we'd move you there. But the problem is , this guy would track you down in a heartbeat if he had a close enough signal. That why we moved you into a specially secluded zone." He replied.
"Hold on.. What do you mean by 'close enough signal'? How is he able to track me from a signal?!" I said with frustration.
"Well , this guy isn't your everyday bank robber. He's very intelligent and has a massive organization hidden all around the city. We acquired some information from that captured member. He told us that 'Giovanni' as they call him, was out to get everyone at working at the bank that day. He was very close to his partner which was killed that day. You're not the only one that's living like this." He said.
"I would like to be relocated to another house. I don't care where. Just not here. There's something wrong with this house" I said.
"The city is only covering one location per person at the bank. We can't just move you whenever you want. And you can't leave Georgia without the proper ID. Thing have changed. Airport security has been more strict than usual. No one leaves the state unless their real identity has been logged. You know what will happen if your name is logged into the flight. And I don't know what's so bad about the house. I love only been with the PD for a few years but I've seen older and more run down homes." He said.
"No no.. It's not about the structure of the home. It's the ambience. I feel as if something is there. That something is interacting with the house when I'm not looking." I said.
"HA HA boy you crack me up!" He laughed. "Is you startin' to get homesick and seein' things ? Believin' in ghosts now?" He asked.
"Oh god no. I'm not one of those people that start rituals and all that" I said trying to sound tough. "I think someone is breaking in at night and messing with the things. You don't think 'Giovanni' has found out where I am have you? I asked.
"Like I said before, your living in a 12 acre marshland. It's barely connected to the highway. No one would come out here just to mess with down things inside an old house. And if it was Giovanni then I'm sure you'd be dead." He said.
"I don't know then. I guess I'll just stay here for a while longer until you can get me in the clear again. I can't believe this is all happening! I just wanted to work for a while and go to college. But now I have to live inside this empty, messed up house because a powerful criminal is after my head." I said with dismay.
"Well it's been a good talk Jessie. Remember now, your name , your occupation, and your life will be like so until we finish up this case. I'll come back in a week." He said.
"Okay, I guess I should check the rest of the house. I haven't been in the basement yet." I said.
