"What is going on here?" I ask no one in particular as I approach my 'home'

There were two carriages parked at the entryway

My father and his wives were all standing in front of the carriages with two guards present....I immediately spot my small bag on the ground.

No one responds to me, instead they carry on with their conversation

"I never knew she was worth a thousand" Helen, one of my fathers wives snickered... I didn't blame her, after all I wasn't her daughter.

"You are in luck, the palace is buying new maids for the upcoming wedding" one of the guards replied

"When is..." she started to ask

"Why don't you mind your business woman" the other guard interposed and it was my turn to chuckle which earned me a dirty look from the bitter Helen

I didn't mind her though... I was more concerned about the ordeal I was currently facing.

"What is going on here?" I asked for the second time...and again, I got no response... and although I chose not to believe, I already knew the answer to my question.

I had just come back from my friend Marina's house where I went to rant about my reoccurring dreams, which are horrifying.

Who would have thought that I would come home to a more horrifying encounter...

My father... if I could still call him that.. was selling me off to become a servant.

I knew that once my mother died he was going to do away with me... I expected this
What I found horrifying was the fact that I was being sold off to the palace...
I was a witch... and witches were forbidden in this land... if they were to find out I would be burned alive... like in my dreams...

"Please...I beg you... take me to the market place and sell me off to a trader instead.." I tried pleading with him but he had already accepted the coins and put my little bag into the carriage. This was the best deal he could get.

"You should be happy little girl" one of the guards said

"She is an ungrateful little bitch, that's what she is" my 'father' said as he counted his coins, making sure no penny was missing from it.

Once he confirmed it was complete, he smiled widely and thanked the guards before turning to go into the house, not even sparing me a glance.

"Goodbye Alana" Maria, my fathers most sensible wife said. Out of the five present, she was the only one with a somewhat somber expression

I give a her little nod and proceed into the carriage with a racing heart, biting back the tears that threatened to fall down my eyes.

We rode till dawn because they made some few stops to purchase other girls before finally riding to our last stop... the palace

I focused on my breathing and tried my best to slow my pounding heart

"Get down and line up!", one of the guards ordered

I practically jump out of the carriage, desperately trying to avoid anything that would draw attention to me.

The guards hastily counted us before handing us over to a woman called 'madame Doris'
We were to start work immediately, but first, she led us to our quarters to keep our belongings.

The quarters was dimly lit and contained up to twelve mattresses ... which was enough for all of us. There were tiny windows above each mattress....
It wasn't bad... at least it was better than my room at home... which had no mattress and I had to sleep on the cold floor

I quickly find a good spot and put my bag by the side to secure it

"Where are we to bath?" One of the girls asks madam Doris

"There is a bathing room beside this quarters" surprisingly, she replied politely
Wow this place is not as bad as I imagined

I still have to find a way to leave as soon as possible...
I scan the room as all the girls claim their spots.
Most of the girls looked just like me... small and they looked around my age... twenty...very few looked a bit older
The only difference between me and them was my curly red hair...which I always tied in a scarf to avoid attention
Well that and the fact that I was a witch

We were given little time to keep our belongings ...after which, duties were assigned.

I was assigned kitchen duty which I was grateful for... the kitchen was busy and no one paid mind to another except for the old maids who quietly conversed with each other

"I wonder why the king decided on an impromptu wedding... maybe he finally found his mate" I heard one girl whisper to another

We were informed that the wedding between our King and his sudden bride to be was to take place the next day

I did not care about that as I was too busy trying to keep my head low and do my duties, which currently consisted of chopping green peppers...whilst also trying to figure out a way to leave this place as soon as possible

"Hey you!", a chubby looking man with a full beard and a bald hair called out as he approached with a basket

"Why are you just standing around doing nothing?" He asks

It took me a moment to realize he was referring to me and before I could respond, he drops the basket on the table

"Take this to the Kings room and change his sheets", He ordered and continued on his way

My eyes widen in shock... as I stare at the basket which was full of linen

The kings room?
Didn't he see the pepper I was chopping?

I stand still for a while... pondering on my next move. I scoff....like I have a choice
Reluctantly, I pick up the basket and find my way out of the rowdy kitchen.
