The Doctor and I spent years together, me hiding, and being found and forgotten. I remember the first time I was found by Sarah Jane Smith, one of many times…
I was swimming in the swimming pool in the back of the TARDIS while Sarah Jane and the Doctor were out exploring. They never swam, I was the only one. I had just finished my eighth lap when I heard a female voice, screeching, “Who are you and why the bloody hell are you here?! Doctor! Doctor, come here, quick! We have an intruder!” I swam to the edge of the pool and pulled myself out. I quickly grabbed a towel and wrapped it around myself. The Doctor appeared, younger than he had been before. This was his fourth regeneration, and every time I saw him, I knew I had less and less time with him. When he walked into the room, he said, “Hello, Sapphire.” Sarah Jane looked at him, incredulous. “You know this woman?!” she shrieked. “Why, yes. Yes I do. And you will soon forget about her. Now, Sarah Jane, be a good girl and get a pot of tea started,” he replied. She scoffed, turned, and left. “Hello, Doctor. How are you, today?” I asked. “Just peachy, Sapphire, dear,” he said sweetly, a small smile playing on his lips. I walked to him, kissed his cheek. “Haven’t forgotten me quite yet, have you?” my Welsh lilt making the sentence longer. “Not yet, dear. Now, run along now and put some clothes on,” my handsome Doctor kissed my forehead, sending me on my way.
I wrote about everything, every little detail, in my journal. Well, by the time I met Sarah Jane, it was my sixth journal. The Doctor had been traveling with Sarah for quite some time before I was discovered for the first time. It was eight months later when she found me again…
Sarah Jane barged into the TARDIS, laughing at something. I jumped, not expecting her to be back so quickly. “Oh!” she exclaimed, not knowing I was there. “Who are you?” she asked. “Here we go again,” I sighed, “Doctor! Would you like to tell Sarah Jane who I am, or should I?” He walked through the door of the TARDIS. “Sarah Jane, Sapph, Sapph, well, you know Sarah Jane,” he said simply. “She knows me? How? Doctor, explain!” “Sapph, take it away,” he walked off. “Sarah Jane, I’m Sapphire. We’ve met before, about eight months ago. And you walked away, forgetting about me. You’re going to walk away soon, and forget again,” I stated. “Why does the Doctor not forget you?” she asked. “He never forgets. He can’t. It’s impossible for a Time Lord to really forget anything. If you turn away, any thought of me disappears from your consciousness, and subconscious. In a Time Lord’s mind, nothing is ever forgotten. It’s always there. The only thing ever forgotten is the Silence,” I babbled, then stopped myself, “Oops, that hasn’t happened yet. Don’t tell the Doctor. He can’t know about the Silence.” She nodded slowly, and then said, “So when I turn my back, you disappear from my mind?” “Yes.” “Well, goodbye then, Sapphire. May we meet again,” she said. I stepped toward her and pulled her towards me for a hug, her dark curls pressed against my cheek. “Sarah Jane, you will have something else after this. You will have a life, a child. I promise you, you will live through this,” I whispered in her ear. She pulled away, smiled, and nodded. She turned away, then, never to see me again, or so I thought.
Sarah Jane and I met once more again, and it was more eventful than ever before. It was her last day aboard the TARDIS, and I knew we had to say goodbye. I knew that the third time we met, she would remember me, and never forget. Sarah Jane Smith would never forget the woman she met, the dweller of the TARDIS, and she would never tell anyone. Not ever.
“Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith,” I appeared behind her and whispered in her ear. She jumped, and turned to me. “Sapphire,” my name escaped her lips. “How do you know me?” I asked. “I- I don’t know. But I remember meeting you. By the pool, by the console, and now. How did I not remember?” she asked. “It’s hard to explain, but you will remember me, now. Just please, do not tell anyone about me. I can’t be known. Goodbye, Sarah Jane. You will never be forgotten.” And from then on, I never met the amazing Sarah Jane Smith again, though the Doctor did, more than once.
Sarah Jane Smith. One of the most remarkable of the Doctor’s companions. The only one to ever remember me. The one woman who will never, ever be remembered was remembered by Sarah Jane Smith. She was amazing.
That was our story, the story of Sarah Jane and I.
