Vanessa Palmer has been my best friend for as long as I can recall. I don't really remember how it started, but to be honest it probably sprouted from our shared upbringing in the same trailer park, where we met through playing football with the younger kids while our mothers drunk until they passed out.
I recall those early mornings when we would stealthily slip out of our trailers, hours before school would start, just to embark on a serene walk to the lake together. By the water's edge, Van and I would nestle ourselves side by side, engaging in heartfelt conversations as we playfully skipped rocks across the shimmering surface.
Van possesses an unparalleled sense of humor that can light up any room, a quality that enables her to effortlessly connect with nearly everyone she encounters. Yet, she has a depth that resonates with serious matters, striking a harmonious balance that truly defines her essence. I can still vividly remember how she was there for me during the turbulence of my first heartbreak, just as I stood by her during her first heartbreak.
Transitioning to high school marked the beginning of a new chapter for us, one where our connection remained unwavering, though our schedules led us to spend less time together. Our friend circles diversified, and school activities absorbed more of our attention.
Despite these changes, our tradition of rendezvousing by the lakeside each morning endured, a testament to the unwavering nature of our friendship. Van remains a beacon of warmth and familiarity in my life, a sentiment that time has not eroded.
While our involvement with the younger kids in soccer has retained its place in our lives, the pace of life has intensified. Our schedules are now interwoven with school assignments and the commitments of our official soccer team, offering us a glimpse of the responsibilities that adulthood is gradually ushering in.
