"I'm telling you," Elena said, standing in the kitchen, arms folded tight across her chest, "it was their mother. Esther. She was the one sealed in the coffin."

I blinked at her from where I was perched on the counter, spoon halfway to my mouth. "As in...the Original Witch? Like, the original Original?"

"Yup." She nodded, looking just as baffled as I felt.

Damon straightened up from where he was leaning against the fridge. "What? How is she even alive? Thought her hybrid freak show of a son ripped her heart out a thousand years ago."

"I don't know." Elena said with a sigh. I'm guessing she has a couple connections in the witching community. Elijah said she wants to live in peace—with her family. Including Klaus."

At the mention of Klaus, I felt my chest tighten. That damned name always made something in me twitch. Not fear. Something worse. Something that involved butterflies and irrational feelings I had no business having.

"She was supposed to be our weapon," Stefan said, voice laced with frustration. "The one thing that could help us kill Klaus."

My eyes dropped to the floor, unease crawling up my spine at those two words. Kill Klaus. I swallowed hard and set the spoon down.

"Yeah, well," I mumbled, trying to sound casual, "not anymore, apparently."

"Well, not anymore...at least not according to Elijah." Elena said.

Stefan's jaw clenched. "That coffin was the only thing stopping Klaus from tearing us to shreds."

"Anyone else feeling a little used right now?" Damon chimed in, shooting me a look.

"Look," Elena said quickly, sensing the tension. "Elijah promised me that his family wouldn't hurt any of us. I believe him"

Before anyone could answer, the doorbell rang.

We all paused and exchanged a look. Classic horror movie vibes.

Elena walked toward the front door, the rest of us following behind like suspicious backup dancers. She opened the door slowly.

No one was there.

Just a single envelope on the doormat, fancy script catching the light.
