"Maddy! Come downstairs we need to get you ready!" My mom called from downstairs. "Coming ma!" I replied as I ran down the stairs towards the living room. My parents bought this beach house at Cousins when I was 5, we've come here every summer since. Cousins was where my parents met, this was a very special place to them and they wanted it to be special for me too.

I sat on a chair and mama started doing my hair. Sat on the couch was a teal dress with floral lace along with a silver tiara my dad bought for me. Today is my 8th birthday, my third birthday at Cousins. My mom had invited our families and my friends to come celebrate with us but no one from my dads side of the family came.

I walked outside to our backyard where my friends and family waited as they sang Happy Birthday. On the table was a rectangular vanilla cake with eight candles and writing that said "Happy 8th birthday Madelyn." I heard my parents arguing at the corner near our house, I couldn't understand exactly what they were saying, their voices were muffled by the sound of my everyone singing. The night before I heard my parents arguing from my bedroom, I was worried and didn't know what was wrong. I closed my eyes as blew my candles out and wished that we could be a happy family again, just like the other summers.

I went outside to sit on the stairs that lead up to the door of our house. I needed to be away from my parents, I couldn't stand seeing them fight again.

Across our house was another beach house, outside that house I saw three boys playing tag. One had black hair, the other had brown hair and the other with curly blonde hair. I thought about asking if I could play. I didn't make a lot of friends at Cousins, there was Nicole who I met on my first year at Cousins, but she couldn't make it this year.

I got up and walked towards the three boys. The boy with blonde hair froze as I stood in front of him, he stared at me with his blue eyes as he waited for me to say something. "Hi! my name's Madelyn!" I pushed out my hand. He looked up then to my feet, I looked at him confused forgetting that I was still wearing my dress and the face paint from my birthday. "What's your name?" I asked, tilting my head to the side.

"Jeremiah, Jeremiah Fisher."

"What's your name?" she asked.

I cleared my throat. "Jeremiah, Jeremiah Fisher" I answered as I shook her hand.

"What about them?" the blonde girl asked as she turned her head to look at my brother and my friend. "That's my brother Conrad and that's our friend Steven." She gave them a big smile and waved quickly.

"You can play but you're it!" Steven said. A smile spread across Madelyn's face. She then let go of my hand, which I forgot I was still holding and started running. "Too slow Fisher"

I was running after her when suddenly I heard the door to our house open, it was Belly Steven's older sister. She was wearing her brown hair into a ponytail and she wore her glasses with white frames. She furrowed her eyebrows when she saw Madelyn. "Who's that?"

"Madelyn, she lives next door" Conrad answered.

"Sussanah said dinner's almost ready." Belly said, as she turned towards the house. She seemed annoyed.

I turned to look at Madelyn and she looked upset, she didn't want us to go. "You guys can go I think i'm gonna stay for a bit."

"Alright see you Jere" Steven said as he made his was to Belly. "You guys never let me play!" Belly butted in as they walked inside.

"Wanna go to the beach?" Madelyn asked, I nodded and a smile spread across her face. She grabbed my hand, dragging me and we started walking.

As we sat down near the water I got to look at her closer, she had white face paint on her cheeks, blue on her eyelids, blue butterflies all over her hair and a blue crystal heart just on top of her forehead, a little above the middle of her eyebrows. "So why are you dressed so fancy? you look like a princess." I asked.

A giggle burst out from her mouth. "Its my birthday." her smile faded.

"You don't look happy for a birthday girl." I said. She put her head down, I then regretted bring it up.

"Just some stuff going on with my parents." She answered still looking down at her feet. I rubbed her back when I saw her eyes glisten, I didn't want her to cry. She looked at me and smiled.

"So, what did you get for your birthday?" I asked, wanting to change the mood.

"My dad got me skates, he said I can take lessons when we get back home." her eyes grew bigger as she spoke. She had these big blue eyes that became lighter when the sun hit them.

We talked until the sunset and I walked her back to her house. I looked back at her two times, one of which I saw her look back as well. I was happy I made another friend at Cousins, it made summer so much more special.

Since that day me and Madelyn had been inseparable.

She was my best friend, the person I looked forward to see the most every summer.
