Evelyn Brown
"Come on Eve!" My brother Micah screamed across the parking lot pulling my attention away from my conversation from my group of friends.
"Ugh." I plant the palm of my hand on my head and leave my friends waving goodbye to them all.
My brother was 2 years older than me and treated me like I was his kid. Too bad he doesn't have any yet. He would make a great dad, just not to me.
"Why are you so embarrassing?" I asked grabbing the handle on the old blue pick up trucking tossing my book bag into the back.
"Ah. You love me." He smiled and pushed my shoulder playfully as I sat in the seat.
Rolling my eyes I close the door and pull my seat belt over. This was his last year of school. Two more years and I'll be in the same boat. Done with this place. I glance back as we drive away from the dump of a school.
Making our way through the traffic we debriefed each other on our days. Our friend circles are very different so we don't really see each other too often until it's time to leave.
"Did you talk to Kat today?" I asked him. His face turning up, off put by me asking of his girlfriend.
"Uh, nah. We, uh, kinda broke up yesterday. She's been avoiding me all day." He explained.
"What?!? Why did you guys break up? Why are you just now telling me?" I badgered glaring him down from my seat.
"It just didn't come up." He explained, "What? This morning over coral I should have mentioned, Hey by the way, my girlfriend cheated on me last night?" He questioned looking at me annoyed.
"Oh Mica, I'm so sorry. F*ck her." I said looking at up to him.
HONK. HONK.
We both jolted and looked up to find us face to face with a semi-truck. Micah swerved the truck landing us face to face with a tree. I threw my hands up to block the incoming blow.
The tires slammed to a halt.
I opened my eyes to find us in the middle of a clearing in the woods.
"Eve! Are you okay?" Micah screams as I lower my hands from my face.
There's trees all around us. I look back over my shoulder the tree we should have ran into is gone. And the sun is setting in the distance.
"Yeah... I-I'm fine." I replied taking a deep breath.
"Well, let's get home safely." Micah replied brushing his hand on my hand reassuringly.
I nod in reply but I am unable to speak. Micah tries to start the car but it doesn't turn over.
He tries again but the engine struggles to turn over again.
"What the hell?" Michael argues hitting his hand on the steering wheel.
I know I can't help right now so I looked out the window coming face to face with a dark figure. As I look I turn back to see Micah in a sleep.
"Micah?" I say shaking him to try and wake him.
What is happening? I turn back to the figure finding the ground covered in fog and the sun now completely gone. The figure was now closer moving closer and closer the fog creeping in heavier.
I reach for the handle. Make a run for it, I thought. I pull the handle. It's locked. What? This cannot be happening. I continue to pull on the handle, the figure getting closer and closer.
Out of time. Face to face with the figure now. The figure pulls his arm back preparing to attack. I throw my hands up again in protection.
I wait.
Nothing, no hit comes my way. I put my arms down to find nothing but a huge tree in front of me. No figure in sight, and the fog lifted.
