I was wandering around the streets of the beautiful city of Tokyo, looking for a place to stay. I arrived at seven P.M., however, it was already two A.M. and the bright and colorful lights of the busy city were stressing me out. Of course, I would have enjoyed the view in another time, nevertheless, even though this trip had been planned for five months now, there was a mistake with my staying, leaving me with no place to stay in so I was completely alone in a foreigner country trying to find a new hotel.
"If you don't find anything tonight, I'll be there tomorrow morning" said through the phone my brother, Luca.
"Yeah, it's a 18 hours flight, remember?" I answered harshly.
"Shit, I forgot. There must be something we can do. You just can't be all alone there, it's dangerous" I could tell Luca was fully desperate. He has always been very protective, so the idea of his little sister being alone far away from home, didn't enthuse him. He was freaking out.
"This was my idea. Don't worry, I'll find something" I tried to calm him down.
"Why Japan, tho?" He was getting on his nerves because he couldn't do anything to help me. I knew him well enough to notice he was also getting slightly angry at me.
"For the millionth time, I needed inspiration" I answered, looking sideways trying to find something.
"And of course, you choose the farthest place on earth" Luca exaggerated.
"Don't be fucking dramatic. If you're not gonna help me, I'll hung up"
"Don't!" He quickly said "Please, stay on the phone until you find something. I couldn't forgive myself if anything happens to you" he sighed.
"I know" I looked around hoping to find something soon. There were a lot of options, they were either weird or creepy, tho. Shared bedrooms, little capsules were you could sleep in - which I thought it was fucking claustrophobic - a business hotel, or even a love hotel where you could go to have some intimacy and a million more of possibilities except for a single normal hotel. Far away in the distance, I saw a light sign with a lot of bright colors. I approached it and when I was close enough I noticed that it was a hostel. It was not what I had on mind, but it was great. "Hey Luca, I think I found something, I'll call you later".
"Okay, if you need anything, call me. I love you" he answered, not very convinced.
"It's okay, I'll be fine. I love you too" I hanged up, entering the building "Uh, hey" I greeted unsure when I came closer to the counter.
"Hello, how can I help you?" a young girl received me, with a sweet voice tone and a strong but beautiful accent.
"I'm looking for a bedroom"
"Let me see" she started looking at a big book she had on the desk, while typing something on the computer. "Looks like it's your lucky day, there's one available. From 12 am until 12 pm"
"Just one night?" I asked disappointed.
"No, no, as many nights as you want but you have to share the room. You have it from 12 am until 12 pm and the other person, from 12 pm until 12 am. Basically, you need to leave the room between those hours" she tried to explain.
"So, I have to be out of here from 12 pm until 12 am?" I asked trying to understand. Again, one million possibilities. Not a single ordinary hostel, tho.
"Yes, you'll have your own locker with your own key so you can store your luggage. It's safe"
I thought about it. I wanted a room for myself but this was probably the best thing I could have found tonight.
"Okay, fine" I sighed.
"How many nights?"
"A week"
"6 nights and seven days, then" she talked to herself while typing on the computer. "By the way, you can extend your stay as many times as you want"
"And what about if I wanna leave earlier?" I asked.
"You can also do that. You have to come here every day to pay the night, so if you wanna leave earlier, you let us know" she took something from one of the many drawers behind her. "Here, put this on" she gave me a black and red wristband with the logo in it.
After a few minutes she gave me all the information, including the room number and the key. It was very easy to find the room since it was on the first floor. Soon, I was in front of the worn out red door with a big shiny, golden twenty two in it. I sighed, hoping the interior looked better than the old and eerie hallway. When I felt ready, I entered the room, turning on the lights, feeling relieved as a nice big room was illuminated. It was not the greatest room but it was better than what I expected. There was a king sized bed in the middle of the room, with two nightstands in each side and a lamp on both of them. In front of the big bed there was the two lockers that the young woman promised me and next to them there was the small bathroom. Red and blue colors were prominent all over the space, some beautiful asian art decorating it. It was nice but it was quiet obvious that it was old.
I texted my brother letting him know that I was okay. I changed to my comfortable pajamas and went to bed, too tired to do anything else. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I fell asleep.
After seven hours of sleep, the rays of sunlight through the window, began to annoy me. I wanted to keep sleeping, however, when I checked the hour on my phone, I realized I had two hours left to leave the room. Quickly, I got up, putting on the first thing that I found in my suitcase. After I finished getting ready, I took my luggage to store it in the locker that the young lady talked to me about earlier that night. When everything was in and I tried to lock it, I noticed that the padlock was broken.
"Fuck" I whispered to myself. I tried one more time just in case but it clearly didn't work. I decided to go to the counter to notify the problem but no one was there "You have to be kidding me. Hello? Anyone there?" Perhaps, it was not my lucky. Finally, I gave up after a few tries, since the place was completely empty "Great".
I ran back to the room, looking for my bag. When I found it, I took out my notebook, ripping one of the sheets. I also took a pen and I started writing a short and simple note.
Hello! Sorry to bother but my locker is broken and I couldn't fix the problem on time. Could you notify any of the workers?
Thank you so much!P.s.: hope you have a great day :)
- A.T.I sighed, putting the note on the desk, ready to leave the room, hoping my roomie doesn't steal all my stuff.
