My pulsating heart throbbed in my chest and tears mingled with my pupils. It was breathtaking. I looked out into the dazzling crowd, each member marked with a flashing bracelet. The air was humming with yelps and cheers and my voice seemed to echo throughout every slope of the stadium.
"Thank you, Los Angeles! I love you, I love you!" An involuntary smile spread across my face and blood rushed to the apples of my cheeks. Then, the end. Confetti fell and the lights dimmed to a pitch black. I took one last glance before turning my back on everything.
Mom was waiting for me behind the upstage curtain, and I ran into her open arms.
"You did great, baby."
Her voice was comforting, like a warm blanket. But I knew that couldn't be it. Andrea Swift always has something else to say.
I guess she saw the eagerness in my eyes because she paused and said, "Yes, that's it. You were radiating happiness the entire show!"
I smiled again, because the truth was, I was happy. Because, she was here. Karlie.
"Okay, well go and get ready. Your friends are waiting."
That's right. My friends. I wondered if she would be there, but pushed the thought out of my head. My mom would've told me. She's always loved Karlie, and I don't blame her. She was special in every way. 100% sunshine, I suppose.
I made my way back to my dressing room, marked with an obnoxiously big golden star with the words "Taylor Swift" plastered on it. It greeted me with golden flints of light and I entered the room.
Inside, I slipped on my blue suede jacket and hoped I didn't look too much like Paddington the bear. Apparently, that's a thing now.
I made my way down the narrow hallway, and with only the sharp sound of my heels clacking keeping me awake.
Tree was standing a few feet away from the entrance and when she saw me coming she jerked up from her spot on the wall.
"Karlie's in there."
My heart nearly stopped.
"What?"
"Karlie... Gloss? Your mom told me you guys were old high school friends, and she was perfect! She had a really elaborate costume and-"
That was Karlie, elaborate. I cut her off.
"Okay, sounds cool."
This whole thing took me to another level. It was too far fetched to be true, was it? I could've thought about it for days, but Tree pushed me on.
I swallowed and pushed through the plastic, beaded curtains.
"Hey, guys! My name's Taylor."
And then, I saw her.
