A week had gone by and Nikolai still continued to talk to Layla. She still didn't understand why. She knew people like Quinn were talking to him, trying to get him to hate everything about her like them, but still he went back. He even gave her his phone number, which was unheard of doing, and walked her home afterschool. While she didn't know why he was being so nice, she soaked up every bit of kindness he sent her way.On Thursday, Layla had another one of her breakdowns during class. It was worse than simple crying. She became infuriated and threw papers around the classroom, toppled over a desk, threw paint around, and, in the end, curled in a ball in the corner fiercely crying.
That day, no one dared to mess with her.
She hated what caused her to have her meltdown. Some guy decided it would've been hilarious to dump red paint all over her painting. Telling her parents what happened wasn't the smoothest ride either.
When her father picked her up, they said nothing as they drove back home. The silence was enough to make her want to burst in tears. She deducted that she wasn't crying because she had used up everything she had earlier.
As they had walked into the house, her father made her sit on the couch. Thinking she was in trouble, Layla already was set on apologizing when he said, "What happened?"
Layla looked up to see her fathers gaze resting on her face. His bronze skin looked worn as his chocolate eyes showed signs of exhaustion. She realized then how her issues must have been weighing on him. Reluctantly, she told him the reason she went haywire. The reason I went crazy is so stupid. I can't believe he left work for this.
He listened to every word she said as she described why she did what she did and listened even more when she explained exactly how she felt. David's heart clenched with sadness as he listened to his only daughter tell him of her anger. The worst part is, he thought, she doesn't even know exactly why she felt her anger to the intensity she did.
When she was done with her story, she felt a weight lift off of her knowing that she shared it with someone. Her father said nothing as he simply opened his arms in which she collapsed into. They stayed like that until her mom had come home and Layla repeated everything she said to her father hours earlier. However, her mom had already knew what happened. She came up with a solution that she believed Layla would benefit from.
"You're getting me a shrink!" Layla had screamed. She absolutely hated the idea; especially because her mom had suggested it. A shrink! Like I'm some crazy person. Like I have serious problems...Okay, maybe I do.
The next day, she dreaded going to the shrink, but she decided it was better than going to school and seeing the jerk that caused all of this. She refused to say anything throughout the two hour long session and on Saturday, she did the same. She stuck to her 'silence only' routine until Tuesday.
I'm tired of the silence, she thought.
As she walked into the building, she saw the same red-head receptionist grinning her plastic grin. Mockingly, Layla smiled back with a smile as fake as the receptionist's nails.
"Dr. Dimitri, correct?" she asked. I've been in here everyday. She has seen me everyday. Why is she questioning me on this?
"Yes, him," Layla answered anyway.
As she called the shrink to let him know Layla's there, Layla found herself looking around the room. The white walls seemed too bright to her making her squint. The benchs that were planted against the walls were actually insanely uncomfortable as Layla found out on her first visit here.
