IF THERE WAS a prize for living in the past, Naomi Sugarman was the twelve-year reigning champion.
In the present, she saw the signs. After years of studying psychology and criminal behaviour, it pained her to understand that if she had looked at any of them in greater detail, she'd have known it was coming. The notes addressing her as 'Sweetheart' in swirling cursive, the voicemails left to her and the clothes of hers - mostly underwear - that went missing. Then there was the car that seemed to trail her for a little too long, and the day she came home from school to find that all of her pants had had the right leg cut off just above the knee; fuck's sake, she'd thought, the one day I wear shorts. Twelve years had let her see them at twenty-seven, but at fifteen? She was none the wiser.
So what do you do when the past comes back to haunt you?

Her new line of work lands her within the FBI, working with a team of elite profilers where any sign missed is another victim. Her ninth case on the team finds them hunting an apparent serial killer who speaks of a 'sweetheart' in his notes to the girls he stalks. Four bodies found, with dozens more coming forward to give evidence of a stalker.
When more girls disappear, the pit drops out of Naomi's stomach as she too receives the attentions of the stalker.
Because while she can't quite profile him, the team can profile her.
And it's soon all too apparent that history really does repeat itself.
