Barnaby's Lullaby

Chi's POV

Chi has hidden herself away in the darkness as she hears Barnaby going around the manor, trying to find where she is. She couldn't see where he went, for all there was... was darkness. The only noises she can hear were Barnaby and the steadiness of her breathing. Her heart is slightly growing in speed as she can feel it against her chest and throat... was this fear? She couldn't be feeling fear, she was only playing a game with the lovable ghost owl. But at the same time, she can't help but expect him to pop out of nowhere just to scare her.
But then as if she didn't expect it, a claw grabbed her and tugged on her suit. She looks back to see the same orange and yellow swirling eyes of the bird who is watching her every move.
"Found you!" Barnaby smiled.
"But... how did you...?" Chi looked at him with confusion.
"Oh silly silly Chi! This is my little domain! I can see all if given the chance to!"
"Isn't that cheating?"
"Oh. Well... I never really didn't... think that through..."
"Its okay. Maybe the next game you'll remember that."
"Oohoohoo! Okay okay!"
Suddenly they both heard the sound of a clock ringing out through the castle. Barnaby pokes out from the darkness as well as Chi.
"Oh my... it appears it's almost party time!!" Barnaby hoots happily. "Maybe three more games will speed up the process! Pleeeeeeeease can we do another round? Pleeeeeeease?"
"Alright... But we need to get the place decorated for the guests too you know."
"Okay okay fine. I'll let you do just that while I wait." Barnaby smiled as he pats Chi on the head with his wing.

Later on, Chi got done with the decorations and played a few games of hide and seek with Barnaby. And soon after, ghosts began to arrive and start to party with Barnaby and Chi. Barnaby would tell the ghosts about his new assistant as he happily had Chi beside him this entire time.
"Hey Barnaby?" Chi looked up at Barnaby.
"Yes my dear?' Barnaby asked.
"You said that you kill people for them to get into the party, right...?"
"Hoohoo, yes I did. Yes I did... ...why do you ask?"
"... Why did you leave me alive?"
Barnaby stood silent as he stared down at Chi, not saying a word.
"...Barnaby?"

Barnaby's POV

He was staring down at Chi not knowing what to say. The smile he had before turned into an unsettling grin, his eyes looked as if they were widened with madness and malice. He knew why he kept her alive but he wished to not say, for it's for him to know and for her to not know. Otherwise... he would show a sign of vulnerability and weakness, despite being a very powerful spectre and a beloved party host by many. He raised his wing and stroke Chi's head with it.
"... Oh sweet Chi... I kill those who enter my castle so they would join the party. They would join me and I wouldn't be forever lonely in this dimension. To party, to talk to, to love... that all I could ever want in my own world... But there is just something missing! And when you came I knew you would be-" Barnaby looked down at her as he paused.
"Knew I'd be what?.." Chi tilted her head.
"You... would be my lovely assistant! Yes! Yeah that's it! Hoohoo! And you've been such a helpful little one, yes you were!" The energetic and eccentric owl was beaming his natural self once again as he happily pats Chi on the head.
"Oh such a rare opportunity and yet you took it! Such joy, and enthusiasm! Hmhmhm! Yes!"

Chi's POV

Chi was confused by the owl's shift of emotions, and she was already seeing something inside of Barnaby that's been hiding from her this whole time. Although... it would be hard to find that side of him, it's better to be on his good side then... whatever is underneath the bubbly personality he has.
"Oh Chi! You should try the cake I baked! You'll enjoy it as much as I would! Hoohoo!"
Chi looked up at Barnaby and shrugged off the feeling before joining Barnaby for some cake. She seemed to crave it as she pigs on the vanilla cake so much. Well I mean... I wouldn't blame her cause who doesn't love cake?

After the party, Chi yawned as she took off her bow tie and threw it to the side. She noticed Barnaby coming in as he had his neck stretched put from his body.
"Hoohoo! What a successful party! I'm so glad you got to enjoy it with me like everyone else!" Barnaby smiled as he looked at Chi.
"Well... it was honestly a great party. I had my fill, I got to chat with so many people..." Chi mumbled a bit.
"Oh you must be exhausted! Here let me help with getting you into your comfy clothes!" Barnaby snapped his talon and Chi's clothes altered into a nightgown.
"Oohoohoo! You're just the cutest little button in that nightgown! I bet you would love it as much as I do!"
"I do. Barnaby. I do." Chi smiled and gave Barnaby a hug. "Thank you..."
She felt Barnaby's wings wrap around her as he hugged her as well, before picking her up.
"Now it's time for bed, silly! You need to get some rest for another party tomorrow!" Barnaby smiled as he carried Chi towards the bed and lays her down.
"You know I could go and tuck myself in right?"
"Yes but allow me... please..." Barnaby looked at Chi with pleading eyes.
"...Fine."
Barnaby hoots happily at the response before tucking Chi in.

Barnaby's POV

"Chi?"
"Yeah?"
"May I... sing you a song? Just to... help you sleep?"
"Well... I mean..."
Barnaby looked at Chi with the same pleading eyes.
"...Okay. I guess it won't hurt..."
"I promise that I will sound sweet for you..." Barnaby clears his throat before screaming out of nowhere. "I'm sorry-"
Chi glared back but kept her head rested on the pillow as Barnaby began to sing.

While the sun sets beyond the horizon
The stars begin to come out to play
Now that you are here, there's no need to be frightened

As Barnaby sung that one part, an orange tear ran down his cheek. Luckily as he looked over to Chi, he noticed that she was asleep and sighs in relief before wiping the tear off his cheek with his wing. He leaned down and kissed Chi on the forehead.

"Sweet dreams, my dear friend..." he mumbled before disappearing into the dark, leaving Chi alone as the silence drowned the room.
