I’m on a break, so I better make this quick.
I spent most of the weekend just trying once more to get my head around the double homicide on that boat, the involvement of our intelligence services, and the idea that there was something in that cabin that I should have noticed. An object, a message, something important.
I know I’m risking a lot, but I was trained to take down anything relevant. I’ve started taking notes, but I just hope I can keep them hidden. It’ll help organise my thoughts. I’ll keep them on me at all times just to be sure.
Here is an excerpt from yesterday:
7.00 AM: I woke to a call from Jan. Obviously distressed. Claims that coming back from an early workout, re-entered her apartment. Convinced there was a strong smell of paraffin or oil in the air. Was certain someone had been there while she was out. Claims there have been other strange events taking place. Explains why she hasn’t spoken to me. I told her it would be OK, I’d see her tonight. Wish she hadn’t used phone. I think they might be listening.
8.45 AM: Entered the station. Called by chief into office, told I was being assigned a new partner, ‘Tony’. Chief seemed uncomfortable, but wouldn’t explain. Met Tony. Supposedly a cop of 16 years service. Now he’s my superior!?
13:40 PM: Obviously a plant. Tony’s knowledge of police procedure seems out of date by a couple of years. Explained this by saying he had been working in the community and not on the shift for a while. He asked me about Jan, and then later asked what was the most unusual thing I had seen on duty. He’s fishing for information. Better be careful.
17:10 PM (Estimate): Left work, but forgot my phone. Came back into office to find Tony at my desk. Said he was looking for some staples. He’s looking for something. What do they think I have?
17:58 PM: Arrived home. Thought I heard someone in other room. No one there. Getting paranoid.
18:36 PM: Received frantic call from Jan. Terribly upset, her car had been broken into and she was convinced someone had followed her to work. Told her I’d get there as soon as possible.
19:05 PM (Estimate): Arrived at Jan’s apartment. Used intercom, she wouldn’t let me in. Said she was fine. Waited.
19:20 PM (Estimate): Someone left the apartment building, holding the door open for me.
19:25 PM (Estimate) : After talking through the door, Jan finally let me in to her apartment. Denied knowing anything, even claimed her car was fine, that she was mistaken. Said it was in her mind. Asked me to leave and not contact her again. Argument escalated. I could smell paraffin in the air. When asked about it, she went red in the face and screamed at me to get out. Rushed through, checking every room for possible housebreaker. No one there. Left confused, practically pushed out of apartment by Jan. She looked ill, strange color. Worried about her.
19:36 PM: Surveyed area. Found Jan’s car. No broken windows or signs of forced entry. The car had not been washed for a few days. Back window clean, the other windows with dirt. Suspect that glass was replaced. Checked a drain next to car. Visible pieces of broken glass inside.
20:05 PM (Estimate): Being followed. Took subway to random destination, then back. Same man following. Waited until in crowded area. Turned and confronted him. He claimed I was mad. Grabbed him in anger and tried to throw him to ground. He was stronger than me, but took him by surprise. Public intervened. Someone mentioned phoning cops, I ran and hid in a bar. Crazy. Have to be careful, will lose my job.
21:10 PM: Came home. Apartment smelled of paraffin or oil.
I have to go, will try to update soon. I’m going to confront the chief. I think he knows something, but I do trust him.
