In the midst of battle there's only one thought that has ever run through my head, don't die.
That's what I was always told. Being trained since I was 8, they always said you can die in battle as a hero, but you could live as a legend. Though it would be a great honor to die for my land, who wouldn't want to be a legend?
I look at him, across the battlefield, fighting for this land, his home, our home. Now my thoughts have changed, I don't care if I live or die, just let him live. But they have him now, making me falter. I scream his name as a dagger is pushed into his heart. His head falls as a single tear drops onto my cheek. I feel hands grab me and a cold dagger against my skin, then black...
I wake, sweating and frantic, having this urge to find the man in my dream. He's there every night, haunting my sleep, making my dreams nightmares. What is this, I think to my self, as my sister rushes into my room, concern written on her face.
"I heard you screaming, are you alright?" She says, her beautiful blue eyes a stark contrast to my dark brown ones.
"Just a dream, my sweet Olette, I'm alright." I say with a smile on my face. This girl worries too much about me, wears her heart on her sleeve, and is kind to everyone. Ondine, her twin, may look just like her, both with beautiful strawberry blond hair and bright blue eyes, but their personality's couldn't be more different. Critical and cold, but always there for her family, she has to be strong for Olette.
"Tobias has breakfast ready, if you want to eat, Ondine is already there, will we see you?" She asks.
I smile and nod my head, "Yes I will be there Olette, I just need to dress for the day." She just smiles and leaves me to get ready. As I walk down the steps the smell of fresh bread fills my nose, "Good morning, Ilayda." Tobias smiles at me... that's where the fresh bread came from, he's never this happy in the morning.
I cock an eyebrow at him "Good morning, brother, and where did you get this fresh bread from when we have no money?" He just laughs to himself.
"Lara said her mother made too many loaves this morning so she had an extra to give me," he says shrugging his shoulders. He's never had a problem getting a lady, with his soft red/brown hair, just like mine, and dark blue eyes, like looking into the deep sea, it's the keeping her around that's a problem for him, he never takes a relationship seriously.
"'Too many loaves' never heard of that before," and now he knows I know as he gives me a side eye. "Anyway, where's Ondine?"
"Outside, you know that girl she will never miss a chance to be out there, but breakfast is ready anyway," Tobias says, popping a couple berries into his mouth.
I call for the girls to come for breakfast, seeing Ondine for the first time today...dirty. "Ondine, you should wash up before you eat," I say, not wanting her dirty hands touching all the food, but she already grabs a handful of berries,"too late." I huff.
"Good morning, Ilayda," she mutters, mouth full of food.
I just glare at her, not being able to take her seriously like that. Olette strolls in and we all sit for breakfast.
"How did you sleep, Ilayda," Ondine questions me, knowing she's talking about my screaming.
"Fine, but maybe we should be asking Tobias about his morning instead, since he some how got a fresh loaf of bread with no money this morning," I give a small side eye and smirk once the girls start questioning himThat afternoon Tobias and Ondine work outside, chopping wood and taking care of the animals, while Olette and I head into the market for some supplies and food.
"Ilayda," Olette turns to me once we're in the square, "that man, the one with the hood, I've seen him before, following me around."
What she says startles me and I look around for the man spotting him. He seems to be about 30, but who knows he could be younger with how hard life is, it makes you look older, but if he's scaring my little sister something needs to be done. I look to Olette, "Are you sure that's the man?"
"Yes, Ilayda he followed me through the market one afternoon, and somehow, he knew my name"she admits, looking down at her feet.
I turn, " Stay here Olette," I storm my way to the man, as he just grins in my direction.
"What do you want with my sister?" I question.
The man just laughs not lowering his hood, I can't see his whole face only his mouth and nose.
"Stop following her, and just leave us alone, or I will get my brother involved, and he won't be nice," I threaten him, and turn away to get back to my sister, but he grabs my arm. "Let me go," I hiss at him.
He whispers one word to me "Elvelvnse," and turns, leaving me there with something that feels familiar. I head back to Olette, who looks like she might cry.
"Are you okay, I saw him grab you, he didn't hurt you did he?" She questions, not even letting me answer. "What did he say to you?"
"It was this weird word, Elvelvnse," I say to her, and she looks just as puzzled as I am.
"What does that even mean," she whispers, "well you're okay and he's gone let's get the supplies, I don't want to think about him any longer."
She takes my hand and pulls us into the square, no longer scared.
