Chapter 1
Marcus’ Point of View
“Mom?”
“Yes, Marcus?”
“Why is there an extra kid in this Christmas photo?”
“Marcus, what are you talking about?”
“I was up in the attic, looking through some old stuff with Alfie for a new video and we came across this Christmas card from 2000 and there’s an extra kid in it with us.”
“Let me see that.”
She took the Christmas card from me and stared at it for a while. She stood there with a blank expression on her face.
“Mom, are you okay?”
She broke down crying and fell to the floor.
“Mom! What is it? Are you okay? Alfie! Come here!”
Alfie came running down the stairs and knelt by my devastated mother.
“It’s going to be all right. Why don’t you have a seat? Come on, it’s okay.” He helped her up and into a chair. When she finally stopped crying, she started to explain who this mystery child is.
“In 1997, I had another child. You don’t really remember her though. You never liked having so many siblings, you stayed away from her. Her name was Alex. One day, I took you and Alex to the supermarket for some groceries. I needed to get one thing an aisle over so I left you in charge of her while I went around the corner. Then you saw these sweets that you both wanted, so you ran to come ask me, leaving Alex by herself in the trolley. Then as we turned the corner, a woman with black hair kidnapped her. I’ve never seen them since.” She started to cry again.
“Really?” I was shocked.
“Really.” She confirmed
“Isn’t there a website where you can search a picture of someone and it will tell you their name?” Alfie asked me
“Yeah! We can scan this picture of her onto the website and then we can get in contact with her! Mom, don’t worry, we’ll get your kid back.” Alfie and I ran off to my room and hopped onto the internet with our fingers crossed.
Alex’s Point of View
“Hey honey! How was your day at school? Get any weird messages? Anybody strange talk to you? Meet any British boys?” My mom always asked the same questions every day after school. #soannoying
“Good, no, no, and no.” I replied sourly “Why do you ask anyways. Like, those questions are so weird.”
“Just for safety” she said with a smile.
I went off to my room and checked my messages on my phone. I saw there were some messages from a foreign number. I know I’m not supposed to talk to foreign people, cause of the extra money. But this person obviously really wanted to talk to me. So I gave them my Facebook. Next thing I know, my computer is beeping like crazy. Blowing up with notifications from a Marcus Butler. I honestly have no idea who the heck this person is. He told me to call him, that he would pay for the long distance fee. I agreed.
“Hello?” a British accented guy answered the phone.
“Hi! This is Alex; you’ve been trying to get in touch with me all day.”
“Yes! Thank you for calling. Um, this is a really weird thing to say but I’m just going to tell you. I’m your brother.”
“Sorry, but that doesn’t make any sense. I’m with my family right now and you’re not here.” Maybe he knew something though. Maybe this is why my mom asked me if I met any British guys….
“I know I’m not there. Guessing buy your accent you’re American. And I’m not, again another difference to have you not believe me. But I can assure you, we are closer than you think. The family you live with now is not your family. I am. Me and my mom. We’re your family. When we were little, you were kidnapped and taken to America by whoever you live with now. Please believe me.”
For some reason I did. “I believe you. Everyday, after school, my mom asks me all these weird questions if any British people contacted me today. She was hiding this from me. I can’t believe this. Wow.”
“Alfie! Alfie, she believes me! I can’t believe this! You have to come live with us in the UK. I’ll get you a plane ticket. I’ll have Alfie and Caspar come over to America to help you pack and then everything will be the way it’s supposed to be.”
“Let’s do it.” I agreed.
