I just ran around this strange world. Ever changing, forever restless. The only thing not moving was the dirt path I walked on. I followed the shimmering silver string tied to my finger. I looked at the ground, this weird world making me feel dizzy. I watched my blue skirt flow around my legs with every step I took. I grabbed my necklace to ground myself in the real world. I had to find where the string led, then find a way to get out. I looked back on the path. The portal I probably fell out of is still floating in the air.I sighed turning back to the path, my eyes still glued to the ground. I couldn't even go ten meters when my forehead bumped against somebody's. We both fell back on our butts. I rubbed my head as I looked up just to see...myself? They looked exactly like me. Except for the flowing pants and dark eyebags they had. They stared right back at me. We both froze, trying to process what the actual bloody crab was happening. We both lifted one hand to our faces. I rubbed my dirty blonde buzz cut while the other me massaged their neck.
We were both awkward. Too awkward to talk to the other. The corner of their lips twitched up a little, while I lifted one of my brows. For some reason other me reminded me of the Cheshire Cat. I pulled my legs closer to me under my skirt. Other me stretched their legs in front of them, then pushed themself up into a crouching position. They finally stood up and extended a hand for me to take. I took it and they pulled me up. We both stumbled a little but finally got to stand normally and not like drunkards. We looked at the other, then we looked at the string connecting my right and their left hand. It was gold on their side and silver on mine.
We looked back at each other as if asking what this nonsense was. I just sat down on a nearby cube-like structure.
"Hello." They mumbled standing before me. I looked up at them my brain still half-frozen.
"Hello." I said waving a little at them. They played with their hands.
"My name's Emily." They said. Great. Same appearance, same name.
"I'm Emily too. Perhaps you know something about this place?" I asked them, gesturing around. They looked around, then back at me shaking their head. I sighed a little and played with the string tied to our hands. "I suppose you just stumbled in there by accident too?"
"Yeah...Can I ask you where you're from?" They asked me.
"From England. Wait, let me guess. You're from there too." They nodded and hummed a little.
"It's like we're the same person..." They mumbled. I nodded at them sighing.
"We are too comfortable with our situation. So wanna make use of it and talk?" They nodded and sat down next to me. They crossed one leg over the other while I propped one up against another cube thingy.
"What's your life like?" They asked. They leaned back supporting themself with their hands behind their back.
"That's weirdly personal, but it's nothing unique." They hummed a little. "What's yours like?"
"It's the same. But everyone is following some kind of script that I don't know of. Sometimes people talk to me when I'm not even there, or compliment my skirt when I'm wearing pants." They explain sharply gesturing with one hand. "Like they're not even people. Just imitating to be people, or copying others!"
"Weird." I leant back on the cube, spreading my arms out. They leant back next to me, hands on their chest.
