The air was cold and the sun was low in the sky, creating afternoon shadows. Haevyn was doing his best to teach Eldrin to block but the Argonian child was cringing instead.

Obviously Haevyn wasn't using his full strength on the child but rather just letting the weight of the stick carry it down towards the lizard. Eldrin covered his head with his hands and began to cry when the stick landed in his eye.

Haevyn knelt down to comfort the young Argonian; showing him again how to hold up the piece of bark to shield himself from the stick. The hatchling was giggling and flailing the bark about which led Haevyn to believe he might get it this time.

Haevyn raised the stick again and dropped it towards Eldrin, again striking him in the head. The child began to cry again. Haevyn repeated this process with the Argonian another eight times.

On the last attempt, Haevyn was still crouched near the child but decided not to offer comfort. The hatchling was still crying as he raised the stick just above the Argonian's head. He dropped it and as it fell towards Eldrin's head, the child lifted his hands above his head.

A small, long cylinder of light materialized in the hands of the hatchling, it swung around and hit the stick away as Haevyn fell backwards in disbelief. Eldrin's tears began to dry and he immediately moved on by stacking stones on top of one another, as if nothing had happened. Haevyn blinked a few times before getting up. He picked up the lizard child and walked into the house.

Haevyn was disappointed to learn that his son was already into petty thievery. His prejudice led his mind to draw its own conclusions. Rutalu insisted he only took the apple because he was hungry and too young to understand what stealing was.

Haevyn thought the boy might need some more disciplined activities in his life. Thus Haevyn resumed teaching Eldrin how to defend himself. Sticks and bark were great ways to learn without much risk and Haevyn thought the boy was going to need a lot of time to learn.

Haevyn told Eldrin that they were just playing a game. Haevyn began to throw small chunks of stick at the lizard where Eldrin was supposed to hold up his bark shield to block.

The hatchling had dropped it and started to complain when he was bombarded with flying splinters. Haevyn showed the boy how to block again and it only took once or twice for him to hold the shield up on his own. Eldrin successfully blocked the next batch and Haevyn was eager to move onto heavier objects.

Haevyn picked up a few rocks and threw them at the lizard. The expression on the child's face went from amused to panic. Eldrin tried to cover his face with his hands, but instinct took over instead, putting his hands together. A bubble made of light appeared around the boy.

Haevyn looked on in wonderment. The stones hit the light shield and fell harmlessly to the ground.

Eldrin had huddled on his elbows and knees with hands covering his head, right after summoning the light. After a couple more seconds the light faded and the boy uncurled. Eldrin's light blue eyes looked at Haevyn with a certain disdain mixed with curiosity over why the mer would have done this.

Haevyn scooped up the boy in his arms and carried him into the house.

Eldrin had grown accustomed to having these strange games with his father figure. This game was just hitting small rocks with a stick as Haevyn threw the stones at him. After a few hits, Eldrin thought it might be more fun if he swung the stick a little harder and hit the stones a little further.
