Chapter 1: Who I am

The most mysterious moment of my life happened when I was three years old, and I didn't remember any of it.
According to my mother, it was just a misunderstanding with my father, and that's why he had to leave us. She didn't tell me much and usually gets mad at me when I ask. Ever since then, we haven't been close, and this was 18 years ago.

My mother, who has not been showing very much emotion towards me, has recently found another man who she has fallen in love with. He sometimes comes over and chats with her, but I don't really care about that. He seems nice though.

With it being in the middle of my summer break, I have nothing to do. So my mother thought it would be such a grand idea to go on vacation with me and the man she has met. I thought it was dangerous since we couldn't use magic; we could get robbed or worse.
"If one of those magic users mugs us, then I'm blaming you," I said.

"We barely have anything as it is; we don't look rich or anything, so why do you think that?"I walk back to my room, waving my hand. "Fine, fine. I'll go since you really want me so badly."

As I get in my room, I grab my suitcase and start packing up my things. Suddenly, I hear the front door open; it was Jason, the man my mother has met. Half of me was excited. I never remembered my father. The other side of me was nervous, almost like I couldn't speak or do anything.

I finished packing up my things and considered talking to him. After almost a minute of standing around thinking, I decided to go out and greet myself. As I slowly walk out of my room, I see him sitting next to the counter in the kitchen. He has black short hair and is pretty fit. He notices me walking out of my room and walks towards me. "Jessica, wasn't it?" he says with a calming voice while towering over me.

I must've been really afraid; I couldn't move, and my body was visibly afraid. I didn't like tall people. After holding my left arm from shaking, my mother steps in. "Excuse her; she sometimes blanks out when seeing new things or people."

He smiles and walks away. "So, when are we going?""I was waiting on Jessica to pack her things; she's probably finished."

I ran back into my room questioning what just happened. "How could I just stand there without saying anything?!" This has happened before as well, for as long as I could remember.

I grab my suitcase, ignoring how heavy it is and walk outside my room.
As I'm walking to the door, I tell my mother that I'll be waiting outside for them. "Well, are you at least going to eat breakfast or use the bathroom?" I had already left the house before she could finish.

After waiting outside for around twenty minutes, they finally came outside. "How long have you guys been in there!? It's been over twenty minutes, and it's summer!"My mother walks over to me and hugs me like we haven't seen each other in years.

I break out of the hug feeling embarrassed. This took me by surprise since we're not that close. Jason sneaks up behind my mother without my notice, "I got you and your mother's bag; shall we get going?" I cross my arms and start walking. "If we want to get there, then we might as well start now," I said.
My mother looks at Jason, and both of them start following me from behind. "Do you even know where you're going?" She says. "Aren't we walking?" I asked.

My mother stops walking, same for Jason. "We're going to be taking my sailboat to Frostmill Island," she says.
I got excited; I always loved the cold, and being at an ice island is the next best thing. I can learn new cultures, learn some new skills even! "Really? Where is your boat?" I said, with a high-pitched voice. She smiles. "Follow me."

After we've made it to the docks that looked really old; there's plants growing out of control all over the place, I noticed a sailboat that's docked at the end of it.
"Well, there she is, my Spear of the Sea." my mom says.

"Finally, some rest," I said as I climb aboard."I'm going to stay below for a while and get some rest, yell once we get there." My mother nods as I close the door leading to the deck below.

For what seemed to be a few hours that was actually three, we've finally arrived.
"We've made it!" someone yells. I hear screaming from above.

Must've been my mother, she always likes to yell about anything, mostly to me. I get up after thinking for a bit and head to the upper deck.We must've been through a storm since my mother and Jason are wet, and there's also a fish or two on the deck.

"Jessica, go get our baggage, me and Jason will pick out a place to stay.""Mph, just like always," I say in a depressing voice.

This is going to be a long trip, I can feel it.
