Months later, after the outbreak had spread like wildfire, I found myself standing in line at a military recruitment center. It had become a beacon of hope for those of us who had survived the initial chaos. The military was our last line of defense against the relentless tide of infected, and I was determined to join their ranks.

As I waited my turn, my thoughts drifted back to that fateful day when my family had turned into monsters. It was a memory that haunted my every moment, a reminder of the world we had lost.

The recruitment process was grueling, a series of physical and mental tests designed to weed out the weak. But I was driven by a burning desire to protect what was left of humanity. I pushed myself to the limit, determined to prove that I was capable of surviving in this new world.

It was during the training that I met Jennie, the young woman from the recruitment center. We were assigned to the same group, along with my friends Lisa and Rosé. The rigorous training brought us closer together as we faced the physical and emotional challenges that came with it.

Our days were filled with intense workouts and combat simulations, but amidst the chaos and the exhaustion, we found moments of laughter and camaraderie.

One day, as we were crawling through a muddy obstacle course, Jennie couldn't help but crack a joke. Covered in mud, she turned to me and said, "Jisoo, I think we've just set a new fashion trend. Mud masks are so last season, it's all about the full-body mud bath now!"

We burst into laughter, even as we struggled to push through the muck. Lisa, who was stuck behind a particularly stubborn mud pit, called out, "Well, this better make our skin look amazing because I've never been so dirty in my life!"

Rosé, always the optimist, chimed in, "At least we'll have some interesting stories to tell when we survive this madness. 'Remember that time we rolled around in the mud to escape zombies?'"

Our shared laughter echoed through the training ground, a brief respite from the harsh reality of the world outside. These moments of humor and camaraderie were what kept us going, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, there was still room for laughter and friendship.

As the days turned into weeks, Jennie and I found ourselves drawn to each other. We would steal moments away from the grueling training to talk, to share our fears and dreams, and sometimes, just to be together.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Jennie and I found ourselves on the rooftop of our training facility. The world had become a different place, but in that moment, it was just the two of us, the stars above, and a glimmer of hope.

We sat side by side, our fingers barely touching. In the silence of the night, I finally mustered the courage to speak. "Jennie, I never thought I'd find someone who understands what I've been through, someone who makes me feel like I'm not alone in this."

She turned to me, her eyes filled with a warmth that made my heart race. "Jisoo, I feel the same way. You've been my anchor in this storm, and I can't imagine going through this without you."

As we leaned in, our lips met in a gentle, tentative kiss. In that stolen moment of intimacy, the world outside ceased to exist, and it was just us, finding solace and love amidst the chaos.

But our newfound happiness was short-lived. The next morning, our commander informed us that a dangerous mission required a small, specialized unit. Jennie and Rosé were chosen for this mission, their skills deemed essential. They would be separated from us, leaving Lisa and me at the base.

As we said our farewells, a sense of unease settled over us. We knew the risks of the mission, and the fear of losing our friends hung heavy in the air. We watched them depart, their figures disappearing into the distance, leaving us behind with a mixture of hope and worry.
