The Child I Never Had

I opened my eyes like a newborn to the sun.

Flourescent light stung past the eyelids and left me blinking.

The stick shook in front of me, my hands trembling like there was no tomorrow.

But there would be, right?

"Pregnancy is not the end of the world, but the beginning of a new one." I recited aloud, the pregnancy books pages still fresh in my mind.

And as my eyes adjusted, the plus became more obvious.

I gripped the sink.

I was only 18, life for me was just beginning. And so was his. What would he say? He had a life to live, he didn't need a child to slow him down.

Though, he would be a magnificent father.

Suddenly, the air around me thickened before pulling thin, my lungs taken by surprise while loud bangs sounded from the hall.

I prepared myself for a battle, kicking the door down. In front of me stood a woman with her hands up. She...looked familiar, short choppy black hair, skin almost as tan as mine, green eyes like mine, no irises. She wore a flowing white robe, looking much like the royal attire of Tamaran.

"Mother, calm down."
