The boys, hearing Natia's voice, rushed into the foyer, their excitement was evident. "Natia! Mom!" they shouted in unison, their bodies colliding with hers as Joshua set her down.
They enveloped her in enthusiastic hugs, their joyful cheers echoing in the high-ceilinged space.
"Awe," Natia exclaimed, her heart swelling with love as she took in their faces. She glanced around and noticed a colorful "Welcome Home" banner hanging from the wall by the staircase. The sight warmed her soul.
"Come on, let's get you off your feet," Joshua insisted, a teasing tone in his voice.
"I've only been standing for about a minute, Joshua," Natia replied, raising an eyebrow at his overprotectiveness.
"That's a minute too long for me," he countered, and before she could protest further, he scooped her back up into his arms, cradling her against him.
Natia sighed, half-exasperated and half-amused. "Fine, but you know I can walk."
"Better?" Joshua asked as he set her down in the living room, his smile bright and reassuring.
"Better," she replied, rolling her eyes playfully.
Turning to the boys, Natia asked, "So, what have you guys been up to while I was in the hospital?" Her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
Jeyce and Jamil excitedly began recounting their activities. "We played football!" Jamil said, bouncing on his toes.
"Yeah, and we have so many games coming up," Jeyce added, his enthusiasm contagious.
Natia laughed lightly. "So, you all are playing football this year? That's a lot of games I'll have to go to."
"But you're coming, right?" Jamil pressed, his eyes wide with anticipation.
"You have to come," Jeyce echoed, a hint of desperation in his voice.
"Of course!" Natia assured them. "I'm gonna get custom-made shirts so I can wear them to the games."
Joshua pouted playfully. "Why don't you have a custom-made shirt for me?" he asked, his mock hurt expression making Natia laugh.
"Alright, since you want to be included so badly, I'll get one for you too," she replied, shaking her head in amusement.
"Deal," Joshua said, his smile returning.
Later that day, after the excitement had settled, Joshua led Natia into the nursery. "I want to show you something," he said, his voice low and filled with anticipation. He walked over to the closet and opened the door, revealing a surprising sight.
Natia gasped. Inside was an extravagant display of pink heart-shaped foil balloons, an abundance of flowers, and a giant stuffed bear holding a jewelry box. The room felt like a fairytale.
"Joshua," Natia breathed, her eyes glistening with tears as she took in the sight before her.
"This is why they wouldn't let you come in here," he explained. "I've been working on your push present the moment I found out we were having twins."
Overwhelmed with emotion, Natia stepped forward and hugged Joshua tightly. It felt like the weight of the world had been lifted from her shoulders, and for the first time in a long while, she kissed him on the lips, savoring the sweetness of the moment. "I love it, thank you so much," she said, her voice muffled against him.
