Monotony is a state of being.
From childhood, we are very carefully spoon fed a certain set of ideals. A certain array of principles regarding the optimal path we should follow in life.
It is good to try new things.
To experience new sensations.
To meet different types of people.
You've probably been told this a million different times, sometimes occasionally without even realizing it, at least not without a more careful glance in retrospect.
Think about that time you were at a relative's house, or were out eating with your parents, only for them to offer you a portion of their food off of the edge of their plate. "Try it!" They gave you an encouraging grin, using their fork to slide something foreign onto the edge of your plate. "I promise it'll be good." Whether or not it was actually good may have, well...
It may have varied.
We all have foods that have traumatized our pallets, making us recoil in disgust at the mere thought of consuming them. Sometimes, Nana's chickpea salad tasted like ass, and coughing it out back onto the table was a crucial part of growing up, even if it did net you an ass whooping later on.
Regardless, even if it does suck sometimes, the notion of getting out of your comfort zone isn't a bad one. So long as an individual can take that step with confidence, it can lead to some of the most amazing experiences life has to offer!
So, what's the catch?
The problem is that many people don't subscribe to this motivational poster of a lifestyle. Not because it's bad or anything, but because it's called your "comfort zone" for a reason.
Why go and risk your neck in the unforgiving annals of society, when you can rest peacefully in the same bubble you've always relaxed?
Why try new things when the ones you're already doing are fun?
Why experience new sensations when nothing can top a long shower after a hard day of work or classes?
Why meet new people when you have friends that you value, and enjoy spending time with?
Thus, we follow the same worn footpath we take every day, the tiring yet faithful specter of monotony bleeding into our souls.
We rise.
We clean ourselves up.
We eat.
We go to school, or work, or whatever fills your days.
After our bodies are weary and exhausted, we return home, having only a momentary reprieve before we're back to doing it all again the next day. Sometimes, the pattern is broken, but it never remains that way for too long.
Yes, I know that sounds awfully dramatic, but monotony must be fought somehow, and unfortunate as it may be, our woes cannot be combated with swords and bows. Though even if it were, the world would surely be no simpler place.
The problems we face would just change, and like I've just explained...
The path of change is not an easy one to take for most.
