Mavis was much more than just a forest siren. She had never seen the world, she yearned to, but the sea forbade it. She lived her whole life in the confines of an island with the sea creating a barrier. Of course the townspeople were intrigued, many even successfully crossing the barriers. They fell in love with the forests beauty but faced sea's wrath. and then spread the rumors. "Make sure no one goes there, They won't return." passed in hushed rumors. One managed to go there, and come back, but he fell in love with her.
