The Hidden Painting

"I'm home" I shout as I close the door behind me. It's surprisingly quiet when I let the bag fall to the ground. "Mom?" I ask until I catches something in the corner of my eye. It's a plank. I lift it and discover some ladder. I move some other planks until there's enough space for a person. I slowly put my foot to the ladder and watched the floor disappear as I climb down to the dark.

When I felt the ground underneath me, I turned my head to face a slight light. I walked to it and wondered if my mom was gonna jump scare me with a cake or a small party. But instead I saw a big painting with multicolored trees and a nice little village. My mom sat on a chair and stared at the painting. "Oh! Matt!" she said and turned to my direction. "What's this?" I asked and pointed at the painting. "This is a painting your father made before you were born." she said and stroke the painting.  "Actually. there's something I want to talk to you about." She said. I froze. She only says that when there's something very important. "This painting is a portal to another world. the world your father and I belongs to." I looked at her as if she had gone crazy. "No, it's true. Your father was a dark elf. he was outside the village where I lived and I found him an took him in. He didn't get accepted immediately but after a year everyone loved him. And so did I" "So I'm half dark elf then?" I asked before she shook her head. "No. Your a combination of light elf and dark elf. and your the only one who is that. It's not allowed to like someone who isn't in your species, but your father and I broke that rule. The only reason to why you're still alive is that our village was in war with an city. So your father wanted us to escape through the painting and in this world. I don't know what happened to him or where he is, but we decided to tell you this on your sixteenth birthday." The word hit me like a rock. All my life I've been lied to by my own mother. "Oh, sweetie! I'm so sorry, this is probably a lot to take in, but I did it for your own safety ok?" "OH! SO LYING TO YOUR OWN CHILD IS PROTECTING? I COULD'VE LEARNT LIGHT MAGIC AND DARK MAGIC BY NOW!" I shouted before thinking twice. I felt a tear roll down and. "I-I..." You know what, forget it!" I said before my mom got to finish. I walked to the ladder and went upstairs again.

When I was in the hallway again I sprinted towards my room. I slammed the door and began crying. I lied down in my bed and buried my face in my pillow. I cried until I didn't have the energy to cry and fell asleep.

I woke up and the clock was 2am. I really don't want to be here anymore so I took the nearest bag I could find and packed it with sleeping bag, water bottle, blanket, etc. I went back to the ladders and went down. I placed my foot after the other and slowly climbed down until I touched the ground again. I went to the painting and stroke it. I don't know how to activate the portal. Was I supposed to say a word or was it a spell? I pressed my hand against it and watched it disappear. Aha! I did the same thing with my other hand and fell into the unknown.
