As the days passed, Rachel tried to keep her mind off of Marcus and the mess that had cost her job. She focused on applying to other companies and trying to move past her mistake. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the thought of Marcus from her mind.
She missed his touch, his voice, his presence in her life. She had never felt so alone before, and it was eating her alive.
One night, as she lay in bed scrolling through her phone, a notification popped up on her screen.
It was a message from Marcus.
"I need to see you," it read. "There's something important we need to talk about."
Rachel's heart skipped a beat. She knew she shouldn't meet with him, that it would be a mistake. But she couldn't help the pull she felt towards him.
She agreed to meet him in a deserted parking lot outside of town.
When she arrived, Marcus was waiting for her, his face grave.
"What is it?" she asked, feeling a sense of foreboding.
Marcus hesitated, his eyes sorrowful. "Emma's pregnant," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper.
Rachel felt her heart stop. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Emma, Marcus's wife, was pregnant. It was a bombshell she never saw coming.
And just like that, their already complicated situation had become even more impossible to navigate.
