Stand straight. Head erect. Hands by our sides. This is how we were taught to report to Onyx at The Order of The Silents. The Silents were a secret organisation, directed by our boss, Onyx. No one knew his last name, only that he was the best out there, and no one had ever beaten him. When he was young, soldiers had killed his parents. Since then, he had trained and trained and trained. He had taken every martial arts class, learned how to use every weapon. He had become the master assassin.
From there, he found me. Tiny, starving Indigo. He had brought me up. Given me anything I wanted. Until I turned ten. Then the real fun had started.
Everyday became a martial arts class. Every day, I was using swords, daggers, bows, you name it, on my peers. I became a punching bag.
One day, Onyx observed the class well. He saw me being beaten up. So he took action. Now, not just did I have class from nine till four in the day, I had private classes with Onyx from five till eight. It was hell.
It wasn't until about a year after that started that I realised what good it was doing me. I exceled in all classes. Other students starting hating me, which is what you want when you're an assassin. No personal attachments, when everyone you know could be killed the next day.
And for all that Onyx gave me, I repaid with being his top student.
No breaks. No rest. Just assassinating.
Then, came my first mission. My first kill. And it traumatized me. But did he offer comfort? No.
No breaks. No rest. Just assassinating.
After that, the missions rolled in. One after the other.
No breaks, no rest. Just assassinating.
I soon came to hate him. Him and his posh looks. His mahogany desk. His stuck up smile.
As I stand before him now, and he looks right at me and asks for the papers. No, how are you going Indigo? No did it go well Indigo? No pleasantries. I throw the papers on the desk, and he smiles. "Well done Indigo. Now go pack your bags. You'll be heading on quite the trip tonight."
I sigh. And yet another mission.
"Who is it this time?" I ask.
"Why he goes by the name of Phoenix Chase."
"And where will I be going?"
"Wynbane"
Another sigh from me.
No breaks. No rest. Just assassinating.
When I arrived back in my chambers, the mission profile was already sitting on my desk. As I quickly scanned over it, I noticed that a lot of information was missing from the file.
Name: Phoenix Chase
Gender: Male
Parents: unknown
Age: unknown
Guardian: Alexis Andrews
Address: unknown
Appearance: spies have reported he is tall, with dark, shoulder-length hair. Often wears dark clothes
Other notes: Phoenix is an orphan. Both parents, who are unknown, mysteriously disappeared, around 10 years ago. Phoenix now resides with a woman names Alexis Andrews. Nothing is known about her.
Reason for assassination: There are too many unknowns about this pair. Phoenix's parents disappearing off the face of the Earth, age unknown, address unknown. Alexis also. No information has been filed around her. They may be dangerous and a risk, which is why they need to be assassinated. (By Onyx)
Well, this is going to be a little challenge. Address unknown and mysterious happenings everywhere around this Phoenix. I fold up the note and slide it into my purse.
I then efficiently pack up my belongings into my backpack. I travel light. Assassins have no need for sentimental items. Too many attachments is a weakness. The only significant personal item I carry is a gold locket around my neck. In it, there is a photo of my mother and father. Both of my parents were killed when I was four years old, and the only thing I remember about them, is my father's bright green eyes, and my mother's wide, happy smile. I keep these memories with me everywhere I go. They are the only thing that keep me human. Otherwise, I fear I would become an animal. Have no feelings. Become an empty shell...
I jerk out of my memories, shake my head and head into my enormous ensuite. Onyx might need me to kill of his enemies, but I wasn't going anywhere until I was cleaned. I'd just arrived home after an assassination after all.
After, I bathe in the huge bath, I change into travelling clothes. Comfy, light and easy to blend in. I then proceed to arm myself to the teeth. Who knows what type of trouble someone can get into?
Dagger strapped to the leg, two short swords across the back, hidden under my tunic. Another knife in my boot, and a bow disguised as a walking stick. And my lock picks in my belt. All set.
I take a look in the mirror and see a hardened, blank faced warrior staring back. My clear green eyes stare out from long, lowered lashes. My pixie cut hair stays out of my eyes, and I'm covered in weapons. And not just ones that can be seen. If my jacket was to be taken off, another two knives were hidden and there were even more weapons stitched into the lining of my clothes. It is impossible to completely un-arm me.
I turn away from the mirror and head out the door with my backpack slung over my shoulder. Turn left, walk down corridor, left again, then right. I've lost count how many times I've walked these halls. Finally, I step through the threshold, and back into Onyx's office, for the second time today.
He is completely ignoring me, as usual, and only looks up after I clear my throat for the third time. "Ah, are you off then?" He asks.
"Yes sir"
He looks back down at the papers smothering the desk, and I glare at the top of his head. Then, I turn on my heel, and head out the door of the Order of the Silents.
