Knotty reading!
If betrayal had a name, it would be Sandy.
I glare at my friend and ball my hands into fists at my sides, wishing I could use them.
"It was Brit's idea, so don't deck me. Besides, it'll be fun," she says with an annoying hair flick and a coy glance over her shoulder.
My stomach knots as the group of guys pick their way through the woods toward us. With their name brand t-shirts and nylon shorts, they look more like they're headed to the gym than to spend the night in the forest, but who knows, maybe Brit tricked them into thinking this is a gym. Going by their swagger, they may still believe it.
I spot a familiar face and fight down panic.
"No, it won't. Give me your keys," I demand and thrust my hand, palm up, toward her.
She takes a startled step backward and lifts her arms in the universal sign for 'don't hurt me, I give up'.
"Don't be like that, Caroline," Brit says as she settles her arm across my shoulders. "It will be fun."
I stiffen and turn my glare to her. She tightens her hold on me, taking advantage of our height difference.
"C'mon, you've escaped every social gathering since we started college. It was bound to happen, so why not during your favorite holiday? What better way to celebrate Halloween than an extended, four-day weekend camping trip right next to a cemetery?" Brit says with an exaggerated sweep of her other arm toward the crumbling wall several yards to our right.
I grit my teeth and shove against her side.
"If you wanted it to be fun, you should have invited different guys," I grumble.
Brit's eyebrows disappear into her bangs.
"Why? You mentioned it not being safe for us to be out here alone, so I figured a bit of brawn would fit the bill."
I sigh and roll my eyes before reaching for Sandy's pocket.
"Give me the damn keys. I'm leaving."
"You can't leave now, Kitkat. We just got here."
I close my eyes and fight a shiver of disgust at the familiar voice, recognizing my older brother's friend despite his much deeper timbre. He was cute before puberty, and closer to my age than my brother's, but he was a jerk down to his marrow. I let go of Sandy and force my shoulders to relax.
In my desperation to retrieve Sandy's keys, I turned my back on the enemy and gave him an opportunity to sneak up on me. After a deep breath, I give Sandy and Brit each a quick, accusatory glare before turning and putting the most saccharine smile on my face.
"Hi, Max. My name is Catherine, and if I want to leave, I will." I turn back to Sandy and say in a sickly sweet voice, "So give me the keys, please."
Her eyes dart between me and the group of jocks for a few moments before her hand disappears into her pocket.
