Rue had stayed out later than usual when she arrived home at three in the morning, she was surprised to see that her father's car was parked in the driveway. He usually passed out by nine and slept through the night, only waking up to grab another bottle of booze.
As she walked into the house, she could hear her father's raspy voice slurring his words, even from the other room. She sighed, knowing that he would likely be in a bad mood and would take out his frustrations on her.
"Rue, is that you?" her father called out from the living room.
"Yeah, it's me," she answered, trying to keep her voice calm and even.
"Where have you been all night?" he demanded, taking another swig from the bottle in his hand.
She was shocked with his new concern attitude, he had never bothered to care before.
"Just out with some friends," Rue replied, trying to make her way to her room without drawing any more attention to herself.
Her father stood up, swaying slightly on his feet as he made his way over to her. "Don't you know what time it is?" he slurred. "You should have been home hours ago!"
"I know, I lost track of time," Rue said, trying to push past him to get to her room.
Her father grabbed her by the arm, causing her to stop in her tracks. "You think you can just come and go as you please? You need to learn some respect!"
Rue tried to pull away from him, but he was too strong. "Let go of me," she said through gritted teeth.
Her father tightened his grip on her arm, causing her to wince in pain. "Not until you apologize for disrespecting me!" he growled.
Rue knew there was no reasoning with him when he was like this and she just wanted to sleep for those few hours before she could wake up for her work shift. She took a deep breath and said, "I'm sorry, Dad. It won't happen again."
He let go of her arm and stumbled back to his chair, taking another drink from the bottle. Rue quickly made her way to her room, locking the door behind her. She walked to her window and stared through it. Mr. Fox's curtains were drawn together, disappointed she walked back. Disallowing any sad emotions to bother her especially with the night she had with Tony. She smiled and decided to sleep with no shower.
Rue trudged out of the supermarket, her shoulders drooping as she exited the store. She was tired, but her exhaustion went beyond her physical fatigue.
Rue loved those two little girls with all her heart. They were a joy to be around and their mischief never failed to brighten her day in a twisted way. But last night, It hurt her deeply, and now, as she walked towards Tony's car, she couldn't shake the feeling of regret that came with turning down the chance to spend time with the girls. She had found another girl to babysit them on her behalf.
Last night, Mr. Fox had rejected her advances and had been harsh with his words. Rue couldn't help but feel hurt and embarrassed. She had been sure that there was a connection between them, but now she was left feeling foolish.
As she walked towards Tony, she couldn't help but stare at his car awe. She hadn't seen him with this before. The body was so low to the ground that she couldn't even see under it. The wheels were massive and shiny, with expensive-looking rims that gleamed in the afternoon sun.
Tony stepped out of the car and walked around to the passenger side to open the door for Rue. She hesitated for a moment, not wanting to leave a single smudge on the pristine paint job, but eventually climbed in.
"Nice ride," she said, unable to keep the awe out of her voice.
Tony grinned, clearly pleased with himself. "Yeah, it's pretty sweet, isn't it?"
Rue nodded, still taking in the luxurious interior of the car. The leather seats were so soft that she sank into them, and the dashboard was filled with all sorts of high-tech gadgets that she couldn't even begin to comprehend. It was so high-end, that she felt like she didn't belong. But at the same time, she couldn't deny that it was a thrilling experience to ride in such a luxurious vehicle.
"Where do you want to hang out?" He asked her.
She shrugged her shoulders, "I don't you did a pretty good job last nigh so your choice."
Tony gave her an appreciative and proud smile.
He took her to his where he lived. The first thing Rue noticed was the view. The entire living room wall was made of glass, providing an unobstructed view of the city skyline below. She stepped closer to the glass and gazed out at the lights, mesmerized by the twinkling buildings below.
The décor of the condo was minimalist and modern, with clean lines and a monochromatic color scheme. A plush, white couch sat in the center of the living room, facing a massive flat-screen TV mounted on the wall.
"It is wonderful," She said, dumbfounded.
The condor was nothing she had ever imagined of, she knew that Tony's family was wealthy but she didn't think further the luxury their wealth afforded them.
"How long have you been living here?" She asked surprised that at his age he owned his own place.
"Since i was sixteen." He walked to his kitchen took a glass, "What do you want to drink?" He asked her.
"Water is fine." She replied, still intrigued by the condor.
"You parents just allowed you to live on your own?" Rue couldn't comprehend how possible that was.
He nodded, "They believed i was responsible enough to make the right decisions."
He brought to her lemon flavored water.
"You are lucky," She spoke sadly, her family didn't have that much faith in her.
"Maybe," He said in low remorseful tone. "Are you seeing someone?" He changed the topic abruptly.
"No. Why?" She asked confused.
"I have been trying to get you to go out with me but seems like you don't want or their is someone else." He said.
Rue huffed, trying to light the mood. Was it obvious to others that she was obsessed with someone else. She stared anywhere but his face, afraid he could seem through her lies.
"I didn't know you that well," It was a partial truth.
"Okay..." He spoke taking a step towards her. "Rue," He called her name.
"Mmh..." She responded.
"I would love you to take you out tomorrow. Be ready at 7 in the evening." She was shocked by his audacity and straightforwardness. The nerdy guy she knew in high school was long gone.
she chuckled redirecting her thoughts, "I will be." She said.
