I'm not sure how long I've been here. A week, maybe two? Calendars aren't used, and all days are the same. Our daily routine consists of going to class, returning to our dorms, doing homework, and going to bed. Considering we haven't had a day off, I guess we also have class on weekends. I haven't had much luck in the friends department. It's not against the rules to have friends, but everyone keeps to themselves anyway. I'm starting to feel a little lonely, but I'm also starting to get used to this new way of life. I guess it's just something I'll have to learn to accept. Today, I finally have a day to myself. No TV, books, or colored pencils are available, so I'm not exactly sure what to do. Anything creative was destroyed. Without classes I'm not sure how much time has passed, but it looks like about six o'clock or seven. As I lay in bed hoping this day would end already, I heard the bush rustle below my window. As soon as I heard the noise, I jumped up and rushed over. I looked down and spotted two girls. Because they were crouching behind the bush against the wall of the building, I couldn't quite make out their faces. They looked around and when they didn't see any guards they dashed behind the tree in the middle of the courtyard. Before I could absorb what was happening, I rushed to my bed and stripped it. I quickly tied the sheets together and then tied one end to my bed post. I walked over to the window and looked down. I took a deep breath then scaled the wall down holding the sheet in my shaking hands. I was only on the second floor so it only took a minute or two to reach the ground. I scanned my surroundings looking for the girls I had seen earlier. I saw them running swiftly through a hole in the gate surrounding the school. I quietly and quickly followed them. Once I was through the gate I stood silently watching as they headed to an abandoned building about twenty yards from the gate. I was behind them in no time. I stopped when I saw the building. It was a one-story building with old, brown double doors. The paint was almost non-existent and the walls were covered in weeds that grew into the cement and reached all the way to the roof. My eyes scan the room as I slip inside, looking around. The floor is smooth wood with chipped paint. There are beaten up bleachers on either side of the room. About ten seconds after staring, I finally realized what this building was. An old gym. It was most likely part of the school a while back, but they probably decided that having a gym for unimportants was too much fun. In the corner at the other end of the gym I saw a group of girls in a small circle talking quietly. In an attempt to hear their words, I inch closer. I take another step forward and the floorboards creak beneath my feet. They stop talking and look up at me. I hold my breath as they murmur. One of the girls stands up, "You're the new girl aren't you?" She takes a few steps in my direction and extends her hand "I'm 56241. But In this group I go by Lilly." I hesitate at first, then reach my hand to hers and shake shyly. "I'm 53421." She smiles at me and motions for me to sit with the other girls. "Once every two weeks we gather here to discuss our next plan of action." I sit quietly and ultimately regret following them into this meeting. A girl about a year younger than my pulls out about ten colorful beaded bracelets. Another girl pulls out these circular disks with different colors on them. And lastly Lilly pulls out neon fabric paint. I look around at all these items and feel nauseous. I'm so used to no color and now that I see several other colors then gray, I'm starting to feel anxious and scared. "What are you doing with those? Aren't they banned?" I whispered the last question, scared people would hear me. "Yeah they are, but we have our way of getting things." She laughs loudly and I shrink back into myself. "What you're feeling is totally natural." She strokes my back trying to slow down my rapidly beating heart. "Everyone is always like this at first. Luckily you aren't totally brainwashed yet." She pats my back once more before standing up and spreading her arms out wide. " We have a new member today. Give it up for...Hope." The other two girls clap. The younger girl stands up "My name is Angel. Nice to meet you." She had beautiful chocolate skin. She smiled at me and I was in awe of her perfectly straight white teeth. Angel sits down and the other girl stands up, she's about a foot taller than me and has muscles that make her look like she could lift weights for a living. "My name is June." She flashed me a small smile before walking over to the back of the bleachers and lifted a loose floorboard. Lilly walks over with the small colorful trinkets in hand and drops them inside. "Okay girls. That's all for this meeting. We'll meet back here in two weeks to discuss our next course of action." We all stand up and June picks up the floorboard and closes it, securing it in place. We all make our way out of the gym, Lilly leading the way. I stare after her, admiring her strength and determination. Then what felt like eternity to get to the gym only took ten minutes to get back to my window where I had climbed out. I climb back up and silently slip back into my room. I collapse onto my bed and take a deep breath, feeling relieved to be back. I lay in bed, look up at the ceiling, and sigh. "Hope. I like the sound of that." With a new resolve, I fall asleep with newfound optimism and determination. Little did I know, hope would be the start of something amazing.
