"YOU HAVE CHILDREN?" His mother and aunt shouted in unison, their faces a mix of shock, excitement, and confusion. Their voices echoed through the room, each word a sharp jab to the already tense atmosphere.
"WHAT?!" My entire family yelled at once, their voices overlapping in a chorus of disbelief. Perfect timing, I thought bitterly. What a great way for Ezra to find out—with the whole damn family here.
Ezra stood frozen, a blank expression on his face. But I could see the turmoil beneath the surface—his emotions swirling in a storm, though he was doing his best to keep them hidden.
I opened my mouth to say something, but the words wouldn't come. I felt like a fish gasping for air, my lips moving but no sound escaping.
"You didn't tell me you have two children?" His mother snapped, her tone sharp, her eyes burning with both anger and disbelief.
"That's because he didn't know," I replied, my voice quieter than I intended. All eyes immediately shifted to me, and I felt the weight of every gaze, every question, pressing on me.
The silence was broken by Dee's voice, casual and uninterested. "I'm bored."
"Can we get ice cream?" Dee asked, his voice suddenly filled with excitement.
"ICE CREAM!" Rory shouted, her voice shrill and full of energy.
I glanced at Ari and Ross, who immediately understood the unspoken plan. Without a word, they started walking toward Dee and Rory, picking them up and lifting them out of the chaos.
"Come on, let's get ice cream, yeah?" Ross said with a grin, his voice light and reassuring.
"Yay, Uncle Ross!" Rory giggled, her laughter ringing out as she squirmed in his arms.
"Uncle Lio, why do you look like mummy?" Dee's small voice asked, barely audible as they disappeared down the hallway.
The room fell silent again. Everyone's eyes were on me, waiting for some kind of explanation. I sighed deeply, the weight of their stares pressing down on me.
"Let's just go home," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I'll explain everything there."
Without another word, the girls quickly ran to catch up with me, and we all started walking toward the cars.
Bell looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "How are you going to get out of this one?"
"We've done some crazy things, but this?" Cami added, her voice laced with both concern and amusement. The others nodded in agreement.
"Yeah," Bell said. "This is different."
"I'll figure it out," I muttered, trying to sound more confident than I felt. "We've got a twenty-minute drive."
