I woke up to Kristeen spam-calling me.
"Hey, Kristeen. What's up?"
"Y/n, I don't want to freak you out, but you need to turn on the news. Right now."
Heart racing, I rushed to the living room, grabbed the remote, and flipped through channels until I found the news.
News reporter: "Twenty-three-year-old James O'Neil was found dead last night near Woodsboro Town Square—"
I put Kristeen on speaker.
"Kristeen, I left work last night, and that's right near where I work!"
"I'm just glad you're okay, but... James went to my high school. I even invited him to the get-together."
I could hear Kristeen sobbing on the other end. My stomach dropped—it was devastating to hear that one of her friends had been murdered.
News reporter: "A county-wide curfew will be enforced again. Please stay indoors and lock your doors at night. Stay safe, Woodsboro."
The channel switched to commercials, leaving me in stunned silence.
"Are we still having the get-together?" I asked hesitantly.
"Well, yeah... I spent a lot on this party. It's still happening."
"Okay, I'll see you later then."
I hung up, trying to carry on with my day, but the unease lingered.
By 6 p.m., I was ready and on my way to Kristeen's place. When I parked, I bumped into Isaac.
"You heard the news?" he asked.
"Yeah... I'm really sorry about your friend."
Isaac shrugged. "He wasn't my friend. He was Kristeen's crush, though. Honestly, he was kind of a douche."
"Oh... well, congrats, I guess? I don't know what to say."
Isaac chuckled lightly. "It's fine, Y/n. Let's just have a good night."
"Yeah, nothing's going to ruin tonight."
We knocked on Kristeen's door, and she welcomed us in with her usual energy. I handed her the movies she asked for, and Isaac dropped off pastries in the kitchen.
As the evening went on, what was supposed to be a small get-together turned into a full-blown party. Music was blasting, and one of the scary movies I brought played in the background. From the corner of my eye, I spotted Isaac doing the Robot, trying to impress a girl.
Kristeen approached me with a beer in hand. "Here you go, Bestie!"
She was already tipsy.
"I'm not much of a drinker, but thanks," I said, trying to decline.
"C'mon, just take it, girly! Loosen up!"
Reluctantly, I took the beer and sipped it here and there, but I couldn't shake the awkward feeling of being out of place.
By 8:40, the party was in full swing. Kristeen and Isaac were dancing with their friends while I made my way to the kitchen, hoping to find a soda. I checked the fridge—no luck.
I walked up to Kristeen. "Do you have any soda?"
"Yeah, it's in the fridge in the garage," she replied, before going back to dancing.
I headed to the door near the front entrance, assuming it led to the garage. Opening it, I was greeted by pitch blackness. I flicked on the light switch... and instantly regretted it.
There, in the middle of the garage, was a body. It looked like the girl Isaac had been flirting with earlier. I froze, trying to keep my panic in check. I quickly turned off the light and closed the door, then rushed back to Kristeen.
"We need to talk. Now," I whispered, pulling her aside.
Her expression shifted to concern. "What's going on?"
I leaned in closer. "There's a dead body in your garage."
Kristeen blinked, confused. "Is this a prank?"
She was too drunk to take me seriously. Before I could say more, another girl approached and asked Kristeen where the soda was.
"It's in the garage," Kristeen slurred.
I tried to stop her. "Wait, you don't want to go in there—"
But it was too late. The girl opened the door and let out a bloodcurdling scream, bringing the party to a screeching halt. The music stopped, and then, just as quickly, her scream was cut off.
Suddenly, a tall figure dressed in black emerged from the garage. Panic erupted as people screamed and bolted out of the house.
Someone shouted, "It's the killer! He's back! Call the cops!"
Isaac managed to slip out with the crowd, but I was still stuck in the kitchen with Kristeen.
"The back door!" Kristeen shouted. "We can escape through there!"
She darted out the back, and I was right behind her—until the killer blocked my path. His black robe loomed over me, and I could see the gleaming knife in his hand. I raised my arms instinctively, bracing for the strike.
But it never came.
He stood there, frozen, the knife still raised. The house was silent now—everyone else had fled. It was just him and me.
I slowly lowered my arms, staring into the black voids of his mask. My heart pounded in my chest, fear paralyzing me. One wrong move, and he could end me.
But instead, he slowly lowered his arm, the knife still in his grasp. Then, as he got closer, something shifted. His gloved hand reached up, gently tilting my chin. For a moment, our bodies almost touched, his mask inches from my face.
Just then, police sirens wailed in the distance. Without a word, he turned and slipped out the back door, vanishing into the night.
I stood there, trying to process what had just happened. I had been spared—for now.
