I run, faster than I have run before. My legs hurt, my braces strain and nearly splinter, and my legs crash against each other. I see the door. So close. My mind flashes back to when I first exited Level 1. A red, human-like monster with flakes for skin snatches for my arm but misses. I am almost out. The doors draw closer towards me, and they tempt and renew my energy. I grab a pack of almond water and burst it on the ground, making the monsters slip on the already shiny and slippery floor. I reach the door, slide my leg forward, and the door bursts open.
It reveals a metal elevator, with only one button, which says 'Home'. I am about to shoulder the doors close, but I see Godzilla the moth and his half-developed babies darting towards me, I wrench the doors open to let it pass. The I shoulder it close. The monsters thud, howl, bang, scratch at the doors, but I jam the crowbar firmly in place. The elevator slides down.
Calming, obnoxious elevator music plays. Irritating. But bearable. My braces have halfway fallen off and my legs are slumped on the ground. My watch starts ticking again. I feel tiredness, pain and hunger set in. Godzilla snuggles into my shirt and rests, emitting a purring sound. The doors slide open with a satisfying hiss of gas, and I stumble out.
I am in my office, and people stare at me, awkwardly. I don't care. I'm safe. At last.
I don't bother using the elevator. My mind probably rejects elevators for life.
I drag myself down the stairs, Leaving bloodstains behind me. I see Audrey. Don't bother waving. Just continue my slow descent.
I sigh in relief at home, my legs comfortably nestled in a emergency wheelchair's footholds. Godzilla circles around his temporary habitat, watching his baby moths wriggle around in dried leaves. He lands neatly on my lap, and purrs.
I slurp my instant noodles as I inspect my bandages. Godzilla nibbles on a piece of decaying leaf.
Turn on the TV. Wheel myself towards it.
The news.
'Audrey Hunter, 25, gone missing since yesterday, last seen at a elevator. Any reports about her...'
I nearly choke on my noodles in laughter.
Godzilla tilts his antennae questioningly.
Looks like someone got lost in the Backrooms.
