Waking up to the sound of her alarm Gwen slowly started getting ready for work. She was never a morning person but this job was extremely important to her and she would never do anything that would risk her losing it, even if that meant only sleeping 4 hours. After she finished getting dressed for the day she grabbed a little granola bar on her way out of her apartment and started her short 15-minute walk to work.
Gwen had always prided herself on her independence. From a young age, she had worked tirelessly to be able to send herself off to college, relying on no one but herself to make her dreams a reality. Though it was tough she was proud of herself and was extremely grateful for all her hard work and determination that had gotten her to where she is now.
Lost in thoughts of how she made her way to where she is now she had completely wandered off of her regular route to work. Having to turn around would cause her some loss on time but nothing that would cause her to be late. However, that thought only lasted till she looked down at her watch and realized that she was out of it for way longer than she originally thought. Quickly kicking it into high gear Gwen found herself rushing through the bustling streets of the city hoping to make it to work in time. Her mind was preoccupied with trying to come up with what to tell her boss about her tardiness and she wasn't paying much attention to where she was going and only focusing on speed.
As Gwen hurried along the sidewalk, lost in her thoughts, she suddenly collided with someone, sending her carefully organized stack of papers flying in every direction. Startled, she looked up to see a well-dressed man in his late forties, his expression a mix of surprise and annoyance.
"I'm terribly sorry!!"
Gwen stammered as she bent down to retrieve her scattered documents.
"I wasn't paying attention."
The man's irritation softened, and he offered her a hand.
"No harm done. My fault, too. I was engrossed in my own thoughts."
Gwen accepted his help and quickly helped gather his papers. As she stood up, she couldn't help but notice the expensive suit and the air of wealth that surrounded him. This man was no ordinary passerby.
He extended his hand, introducing himself.
"I'm Robert Lawrence."
He glances down at Gwen's shirt which had her university logo on it.
"Oh wow! Do you go to AOB University? That's quite the school."
Gwen hesitated, not accustomed to sharing with strangers. But there was something about the sincerity in Robert's eyes that made her feel that ease.
"Yes I do, Mr. Lawrence"
"That's very impressive, your parents must be proud. Though I've seen the tuition cost so that must be a sore spot for you."
Gwen looks down, no longer feeling comfortable as to where this conversation has gone.
"I don't have parents sir, and if anyone has a sore spot it's my wallet"
She lets out a small chuckle trying to lighten the mood she soured. Lawrence gives her a look after hearing what she said about not having parents.
"So did you just spawn then?"
He asked her with a perplexed look.
"Erm no, I just don't know them. I've been alone since I can remember heh"
Robert smiled, revealing the confidence of a successful businessman.
"That's very admirable, and I admire your determination. But what if I told you I could make your life much easier? My son, Alexander, is in need of a companion, and I believe you would be a perfect fit."
Gwen's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"Companion?"
Robert nodded.
"Alexander is a good young man, but he's been struggling to find someone who truly understands him. I have a proposition for you, Ms. Gwen. If you agree to date my son and provide him with the companionship he needs, I'll support you financially. You'll have the freedom to focus on your studies and anything else you desire."
The unexpected offer took Gwen aback. She never imagined herself in such a situation, but the allure of financial freedom and the chance to finally pursue her studies without worrying about money was tempting. She thought about her dreams, her ambitions, and the sacrifices she had made to get to this point.
After a moment of consideration, Gwen looked at Robert with determination in her eyes.
"Let me think about tonight, I'll give you your answer tomorrow morning. I promise."
Robert smiled with satisfaction.
"Excellent. I'll be waiting for your call."
Little did Gwen know that this arrangement would begin a complex journey filled with challenges she could never have anticipated. As she embarked on this new chapter of her life, she had no idea that a chance encounter with an unexpected scent would ultimately change everything.
