A week ago, Jennifer got a call from her friend Dalton. He explained to her that the entire friend group was planning on going to a football game, and he wanted her to come. At first, Jennifer hit him with a quick "hell no," but as an attempt to change her mind, he offered to invite Nick. Unfortunately, Jennifer was won over.
Dalton liked to tease Jennifer about her little crush on Nick. He would constantly joke about it, which eventually made it obvious to everyone, even Wade, her brother. Wade hated the fact that Jennifer had a thing for Nick considering Wade and Nick had silent beef for a long time.Jennifer pulled her dark grey duffle bag over her shoulder and made her way down the street. Jennifer was really close to the Edwards Sisters, Kai and Paige. Mainly because they lived so close.
Jennifer turned the corner and jogged onto the girls' front yard. Kai was outside on the front porch. She was sitting on a white, wicker, patio chair with her feet resting on a small table. "Yo Edwards!" Jennifer yelled before making her way up the steps. "Hey Jen," she replied simply before shutting her book, placing it gently on her lap. "Where's Paige?" I asked, sitting my bag down on the railing to release the weight off my shoulders.
Kai rolled her eyes. "She's getting her things around. Still." She said, clearly irritated. Before I could reply, a loud honk unexpectedly rang out. Causing both Jennifer and Kai to jump at the startling noise. "Fuck" Kai said holding her hands over her ears.Jennifer turned to face the sound. Blake, Paige's boyfriend, sat in his new blue pickup truck. Parked in front of the house with his music blaring. "Goddamn it, blake!" Jennifer shouted towards him, but it was no use. His music was so loud that's all he could hear.
The screen door flung open with a loud creek. Paige flew out the front door tightly, gripping three large bags.
Jennifer and Kai grabbed their things, quickly following behind Paige. As the girls made it to Blake's truck, he had finally turned his music off. Jennifer reached for the door handle. "Hey, woah. You guys can't ride with us, " Blake said, pointing at Kai and Jennifer.
"What?" Jennifer snapped. "Why?" Kai asked. "Because. I want time with my girlfriend before we're stuck with you idiots." Jennifer quickly flipped up her middle finger, facing it directly at Blake. "Yeah, fuck you too Jen" He replied before driving off. "Come on, Jennifer." Kai said, pulling on the sleeve of Jen's sage green shirt."Blake can be such a dick. Why does Paige stay with him?" Jennifer complained. She reached for the back pocket of her black baggy cargo pants and pulled out a pack of cigarettes.
"I don't know." Kai said with a shrug.
Jennifer pulled out a hot pink lighter from the side of her bag. "I guess we'll have to ride with Wade, Carly, and Dalton then," Kai replied. "And Nick," Jennifer said while lighting her cigarette.
"Nick? Why is he coming?" Kai asked. Kai didn't really mind Nick but she knew Wade wouldn't be happy about it. "I guess Dalton asked blake to invite him" Jennifer replied with a shrug.Jennifer, Paige, and Carly sat outside the dinner. Jennifer was sat next to Paige, peering over her shoulder and stealing a few of her fries while they searched for a place for Carly. "There's a place in Tribeca for 3000." Paige said after shoving a fry into her mouth. "That's a bit expensive, don't ya' think?" Jennifer asked, looking up from the paper and towards Carly. "Exactly, that's too expensive. The money I saved up won't cover two months' rent. l'm gonna have to work every second
l'm not in class until graduation." She explained."Well, don't even think about not going," Paige replied. The girls knew how much this meant to her.
"I'm not," Carly replied quickly. "Good because you know how proud we are of you," Jennifer chimed in. "It's just an intern ship," Carly said, slightly shaking her head.
"At instyle magazine. Or would you rather stay at the waffle house as a waitress forever?" Paige remarked."No thanks, " Carly said with a chuckle, causing all three girls to laugh lightly.Kai walked over, plopping down next to Carly across from Jennifer. "What're we talking about?" She asked, noticing everyone's amused expressions. "Not much" Carly said with a shrug. "Yeah," Paige said, still chuckling a bit. Carly grabbed the paper, flipping through it on her own.
"Hey babe," Wade said, sitting on the other side of Carly. "Hi," She said, turning to face him. "Sorry. there were these two drunk rednecks wrestling in the bathroom." Wade informed.
Jennifer looked over at him with a brow raised. I was very confused by what she just overheard."Really?" Carly questioned. "There are no rednecks in New york," Kai remarked. "No. There's not, " Wade replied. The girls all shared a look, peering around the table at each other.
Paige grabbed her bag. "I'm gonna go see what Blake's doing. He seems to like that car more than me nowadays." She quickly got up from her seat and pranced away. Jennifer and Kai looked at each other, both recalling their conversation about Blake earlier.
Kai got up, moving to the spot where Paige was sitting previously."Now that we have a second," Wade said. Quickly shooting Jennifer and Kai a look. The girls quickly turned to face he other way, getting the hint. Wade sighed
"--And I'm not trying to make this a big deal I swear. You know I want to have a good time on our road trip this weekend.
But why on earth did your brother have to come with us? You said your parents weren't going to post his bail anymore."Jennifer and Kai locked eyes. Obviously, they had been eavesdropping the entire time. How could they not?
"They didn't. Blake did. He invited him. I guess Nick makes him feel more badass. I don't know, " Carly replied.
Wade let out another sigh. "You guys can turn around now," he said, tossing a crumpled up napkin at Jennifer.
A noise caught Kai and Jen's attention, and as they turned around, they spotted Nick and Dalton making their way over. Kai sighed, resting her head in her hand.
"That's nice." Wade said sarcastically. Nick plopped down next to Jennifer and Dalton next to him. Both laughing."So what do you think, guys? It's gonna be a sweet game tomorrow. Huh?" Wade said. Trying to Lighten the mood. "Yeah," Kai said quietly.
"Dalton, please don't film me," Carly complained.
"What? I'm not filming now, " he lied. I'm still pointing his camera directly at Carly. Jennifer rolled her eyes. "The red light is on dumbass," She remarked.
"Put the camera down. You know she doesn't like people up in her face, " Nick remarked, directing him camera to face the ground. "She fold under pressure," he remarked. "Got something to say to me?" Carly replied angerly."No. I think you've already spoken enough for the both of us. Don't you?" He said sarcastically. "You guys are lame. I'm so out of here. See you." Dalton said, fidgeting with a straw. "Ok, well, I have to use the bathroom. Jen? Can you come with?" Kai asked, standing up from her seat. "Uh, yeah," Jennifer agreed.
"I still don't get what you see in him. He's attractive. Sure, but he's such a dick, " Kai said, washing her hands in the bathroom sink. "I don't know," Jennifer said, lying. She knew why. She just didn't want to get into it.
The girls made their way back outside, but everyone was already in the car's. Ready to leave. "Come on, hurry your asses up!" Dalton yelled out the window.Jennifer sat between Dalton, and Nick and Kai sat in the very back. The group was in for quite the ride.
