The bus smelled like shit.
Because the rain was pouring outside, no windows could be open. Sitting on such a stuffy bus, Min Hui was a little breathless. She put her face beside the window, trying to suck in a little fresh air from the window slit.
The bus suddenly stopped as the door opened and the driver from the front shouted, "We are parking here in Luotang for ten minutes. There's a toilet on the supermarket. Whoever wants to go to the toilet, hurry up and get off ah!" A commotion rose in the bus when the driver stopped speaking.
The bus has been driving on the muddy mountain roads for more than four hours. The tire of the bus burst twice, almost sliding from the hillside road, but luckily the driver was experienced and drove carefully on the muddy road. The passengers inside were all stuffed for four hours and were very tired. So they accept it with open arms when the driver stopped the bus for ten minutes. Almost all the passengers wanted to get down to "stretch their legs", so the door was crowded.
The so-called "toilet" was so dirty that there was not a single clean place to put your hand and feet, so Min Hui decided not to go. She didn't get down from the bus, just opened the window to breath in fresh air. The fresh air rushed in the open window and freshened her mind. The dampness of the rain and the chill of the mountains made Min Hui sneez, she was about to close her eyes when the girl beside her suddenly stood up and gave her a gentle nudge: "Hey, I want to go to the toilet, can you watch over my luggage?" The girl said while pointing to a lattice canvas luggage bag at her feet.
Min Hui nodded her head.
"And this." The girl took off another small nylon bag that she had with her and shoved it into her hands, "I have many important things in it."
Min Hui: "......" So trusting ah.
"Thanks." The girl smiled brightly, she didn't wait for her to nod again and went towards the door to get off from the bus.
Min Hui stared dumbfounded at the back of the girl. She didn't know this person, although they were seated side by side, none of them spoke to each other throughout the whole journey. Seeing her so casually handed her things to her Min Hui couldn't help but think; she must be drunk.
The bag was bulging, who knew what was inside. The zipper was pulled a little, barely a crack that may could show the contents inside. The girl was in her twenties, looking at her outfit, she looked like an ordinary working woman. Perhaps, she was moving somewhere and the bag contains all of her savings. Min Hui didn't dare to open the bag, only held it tightly in her arms.
Outside the window, the sky was gloomy, rain hit the roof of the bus with a 'pitter patter' sound. Umbrella was practically useless on such a heavy rain. The passengers who got off were moving like flying with their bags over their head, looking like a group of rats fleeing in haste.
Min Hui would pass by Luotang every time she went to Anping. More than ten years had passed but the appearance of the supermarket hasn't changed at all. The so-called supermarket was actually just a single tiled room, its name "Oriental Supermarket" was hung on the door. The two yellow dogs whom she met everytime passing by here were still lying under the eaves, the big pot selling marinated eggs was still emitting black smoke. The owner's wife was still watching TV on a wicker chair, and the owner who was still diligently greeting customers was also same. Business was not bad at all, even in the middle of nowhere, customers could still be seen. There were colorful instant noodles on the shelves, which were all snatched up by the influx of customers at once.
A short man walked past the car window with a huge green dragon toy on his arm, the teeth and claws of the dragon pulled open in a snarl which looked scary. Min Hui's gaze paused for a second longer on the green dragon, the man immediately noticed her gaze, looked up and gave her a fierce glare before raising his middle finger at her and stomping away.
