(None of the art belongs to me its off pintrest)
Since the death of my father, I haven't been able to stay at my house. It just seems so... empty. I haven't been able to sleep. Everything there reminds me of him.
That's why I decided to move in with my mom. My mom lives in a small town. They are very old fashioned there. Which is why I've never been there. But anything better than here.
I packed up my stuff and took the train to as close to the town I could. It brought me to a busy city. What an ironic thing.
Go to a busy city to get to a quiet town. I'm supposed to meet my mom here but there's so many people I can't find her. It also doesn't help that I haven't seen her in 5 years. I thought I wouldn't ever find her in a busy place like this then, I heard a sound of a flute it had a Beautiful melody. I tried to see where it was coming from but I couldn't find it. I thought I saw a person on top of a roof playing a flute. It was a dark silhouette.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and I jumped startled I turned around to see my mom.
"Oh! My poor Rory! I missed you so!" my mom cried.
She jumped on me and hugged me tightly.
"Hi Mama I missed you too," I hugged her and then pulled away.
"You've grown up so much but, my dear, you look dreadful!" She said well examining me.
She always does this. She's always worried me.
"I'm fine I just haven't gotten much sleep," I muttered.
She took my hand and started dragging me,"Well come on then. We simply must get you home."
As she dragged me along, I looked back at the roof where I saw the silhouette she was gone and so was the music. Mom dragged me to the edge of the city. We stood in front of the woods.
" We're not going in there are we?" I asked nervously.
My mother nods and drags me into the forest. It was dark and creepy you could hear every noise. I have it to admit. I was scared.
We kept walking and we came to a clearing in the trees.
There was a sign that read wrathford. I looked forward and saw a small town. There were a few people wandering about. To my surprise they all looked different. Some had a sinister aura about them and hungry eyes. Others had a sophisticated look and moved with grace and caution. That's Only the first 2 people I saw.
"Lovely town isn't it?" my Mother asked happily.
This made me wonder where my mom fit in here.
"Everyone here is so different," I replied.
My Mother smiled and nodded in agreement. We continue to walk down the dirt road looking at the people and houses. As we pass by I realize that the peoples ages were also very different. No one looked younger than 16 but there was a mix of young adults and older people.
If they were old they looked ancient and wise but if they were young they looked responsible. The houses were rather normal though. Rather dark but that's not unusual.
"Our house is right this way dear," my mother said as we walked up to a dark cottage.
"This is where we're living?" I asked clearly not a fan of this run down cottage.
"Don't be ungrateful dear. This house was a gift from Albert," she said like she expected me to know who that was. "Who's Albert?" I asked.
She stared at me as if I just insulted her. She sighed and said, "He's your new dad."
I stared at her completely astounded. Dad just died. Now she's trying to say this new guy is my dad?
"Honey I can tell you're upset but trust me there's a lot you have to learn about Wrathford," she said calmly.
"What the hell does Albert have to do with Wrathford?!" I yell.
"Don't yell Rory," she said it with calmness but to somehow a bit scary.
She had a weird look in her eyes.
I never found her scary before so why now? I took a deep breath and started walking towards the house.
"let's just go..." I muttered.
My mother follows behind me and gives me a tour of the house. The house is a pretty small, we have a small kitchen attached to the dining room, a living Room with a small couch, One bathroom, and 2 bedrooms. She has the biggest one with a master bed that looks like it's never been touched. Her room was filled with red curtains blankets and dresses. She must really like the color. My room was in the attic. It's probably the only room in the house with a window without curtains. I had a small bed, with a equally small nightstand. There was a small dresser under the window. I sat on the bed to find it was not comfy. It felt like I was sitting on a plank of wood.
It creaked so loudly I swore it was gonna break..
"Mom! Why the hell do you get the good bed while I have this junk?!" I yelled at her.
My mother sat next to me and folded her arms, "how old are you? she asked sternly.
I didn't answer her. I know that I should act like an adult but all I want to do is act like a child. I've always been like this ever since I was 14. Not to be one of those people but, all the other kids were getting jobs and arguing with their parents but I was clinging to my father like a toddler. Mother would say "What are you going to do when he's not around?" I knew she was right but I still refused to grow up.
"Well?" mother said looking at me with those piercing eyes.
There was definitely something different about her eyes.
I reluctantly muttered, "21..."
"Then why are you acting like a child? I didn't think much of it when you asked to move in, but you're adult. An adult without a job or a place to stay. You don't get to be picky."
I didn't want to respond. I wanted to deny her but she was right.
"I know. I'm sorry."
I stared at the ground. My mother exited the room without a word. I was left alone with my thoughts. I laid down on the bed and stared at the window. The bed creaked as I moved. I didn't even recognize it was night.
Ive gotten used to not slepping at night. There's no way I'm going to sleep. I shut my eyes anyway and tried to sleep. But then I heard it. The flute again...
Surely I was going crazy there's no way the flute player followed me here let alone that they're real. I went to the window to check. There they were. On top of the neighbor across from us roof. I try to make out features but still all I could see was a silhouette. I stared at them for a while enjoying their song. Then the door opened.
I saw my mother leaving the house. She walked up to the neighbors and waved to the silhouette. So it's real? They stopped playing the flute and jumped off of the roof. I thought they surely would have gotten hurt, but they were fine. They landed gracefully in front of my mother...
