Three days later

Last night was one of the worst nights of my life. The weaker sedative wasn't working for the pain, so Weston ended up being forced to give me that sedative that caused hallucinations, much to my Dad's and Uncles' dismay.

The hallucinations were crippling last night. I couldn't take it. One after the other. Legacy, the rogue who killed him. Seiko, Zev, Error. . . somewhere beyond the stone mountains that was blanketed in snow and blood and dead bodies everywhere.

I couldn't escape it. It was like I was there, like I was the main reason for all of the destruction around me. Like I was the cause of the deaths of so many. . . Rogues and pack bound wolves alike.

Those hallucinations were so, so scary. I would rather be in the real world and have those things happen instead of being trapped in my own mind, unable to run or escape or scream for help.

It was a nightmare that lasted for hours and I couldn't wake up from it but the moment Weston reversed the sedative due to my Dad's begging, I refused to take it again and just opted to deal with the pain.

Which surprisingly wasn't that bad today. Compared to yesterday, today resembled this dull, achy, tugging sensation. Like something was pulling me towards the eastern portion of my territory.

A small smile breaks free when I realize that Seiko had to be nearby as I hear what I now recognized as his wolf's howl.

It was close, almost calling me to it and despite Edge's apprehensions to it before, he was just as drawn to it as I was.

Two more howls sound nearby, filling the morning air with Seiko's. I know those have to belong to Zev and Error's wolves. . . Somehow I got a feeling that Seiko wouldn't be caught dead anywhere without them.

"Alpha,"

Looking up when I hear my Dad's voice, I see him standing by the beginning of the obstacle course he'd constructed for all the new Beta blood members that signed up for a chance at the position of my second in command.

There were twenty males and females standing at one end of the field, awaiting my instruction.

Standing up straight, I nod to my Dad who begins bringing the Beta blood members forward.

Uncle Rhett and Uncle Leif line them up in four single file lines, with five wolves in each one.

They were to not only compete against each other and run the entire course that consisted of some of the most grueling training I'd been through, but also have to run the worst of the course with me when it came down to the final three.

We started with fifty Beta blood members, but that quickly dwindled to forty after the mental evaluation on the first day.

Betas were meant to be the ones who protected the pack if the Alpha can not. I need to be able to trust my Beta with my life and the wellbeing of my pack, so if those who wanted the position couldn't pass the mental evaluation, than they definitely wouldn't be able to make rational decisions for the pack.

The second day, we started with the forty Beta blood members who passed the mental evaluation and we gave them health assessments to determine whether they were healthy or not to withstand the next set of tests.

We lost another five.

The same day, we set the remaining 35 Beta blood members up with strength and endurance tests.
