"Sit" he smiled in satisfaction tapping the space next to him.

I complied and sat next to Sawyer picking up a throw pillow and placing it on my thigh.

"You're not sleepy yet?" Sawyer asked, his voice low.

"Sleepy? No, hungry? Always. What about you?" I shrugged flashing him a sly grin.

"Wide awake. How about another movie?" he suggested, turning to me with that look that said he was about to pick the worst action film known to man.

"Sure, I've got one in mind," I said, snatching the remote from him before he could suggest anything involving explosions. I scrolled through Netflix, landing on *Purple Hearts*. over the selection before landing on Purple Hearts. Yeah, I know-cheesy military romance, but it's my guilty pleasure, okay?.

Halfway through the movie, I realized I had a burning question I'd been dying to ask. It was sitting there, heavy on my chest like a secret.

"Sawyer..." I began, my eyes darting to his jawline. He had a jawline that could cut glass, which was probably why I was so distracted.

"Yes, sweetheart?" He turned to me with that sweet look that made me want to roll my eyes and eat him at the same time. Ugh. He was too gorgeous for his own good.

"Have you ever been in love? Or... are you in love with anyone right now?" I asked, instantly regretting it. Why did I do that? Great, now I was going to hate myself.

Sawyer stayed quiet for a second, a little too long for my comfort.

"Well," he finally said, leaning back. "I wouldn't call it love it was more like an obsession. I just felt the need to impress her. But that was years ago."

Oh God, here we go. "And... what about recently?" I asked, bracing myself for the knife about to stab my heart.

He turned to look at me, and for a second, I thought I saw hesitation. "Yeah, there's someone," he admitted, and yep there it was. The dagger to my chest. Probably Nicole, or whatever her name was.

"And what was her name? The girl you had an obsession with." I asked, already knowing I was torturing myself for no reason.

Maybe I had a secret love of emotional pain.

"Uh..." Sawyer rubbed the back of his neck, clearly struggling. "Something starting with an E? Elizabeth? No, wait—Emily! Yeah, Emily."

I blinked at him. He had to be joking.

"You're unbelievable." I laughed, shaking my head. "So, what went wrong?"

"Gold-digger. I caught her sleeping with my brother, on my birthday...in my room." he said, his jaw tightening.it just kept getting worse.

"Oh." Yikes. Not the kind of family drama I was hoping for.

This man had layers, and not the fun, flirty kind. More like a tragic backstory that Netflix Originals would die for.

"Forget about it," he sighed, brushing it off.

"Okay, then. So... about your currently, am I just a one-night stand?" I asked, the question coming out sharper than I intended. Seriously, Kamari? I was annoyed, and it was showing.

Sawyer's brows furrowed as he stared at me, clearly confused. "Darling, you're more than just a one-night stand," he said, his hand brushing my cheek in that soft, sweet way that almost made me believe him. But no. I pulled away, not letting him get away that easy.
