I sped my way down to the lab which contained 514E with the red-haired intern trying to catch up. This is the precise reason why I proposed the Lab to start an internship program. Young minds, new ideas! She thought of something that I could've never imagined myself doing!
"Dr. Veinar," she called from behind. "What are you planning to do with the test subject?"
"Oh, I'm not going to do anything to her, sweet child," I breathed with anticipation. "You are. So start thinking of how you're going to do it."
"B-but," she stammered. "But I'm so inexperienced and-"
"If you have the guts to bring it forward to me, you must have the guts to go through with it."
That shut her up. I swiped my access card across the panel and squeezed through the metal doors before they opened completely. I must look insane to this kid right now.
"Show me."
It's now 5.45 p.m. Someone had messaged me but I haven't bothered to check, too absorbed into the workings of this kid. The level of critical thinking she must have. I'll have to keep her at all costs.
I watched and she skillfully sewed up the opening with even stitches.
"I'm done, Dr. Veinar."
I lifted my arms to my chest and started joining them together. Clap. Clap. Clap. "Amazing work, kid. What's your name, full name?"
"Violette Kiersten Blaire."
A unique person with an equally unique name.
"Go clean yourself up and ask the clean-up crew to come too. I'll talk to you in my office."
In my office, I waited for her arrival in anticipation. I had finished up all my documents and responded to the message Kiran sent saying he will pick me up at 9. The long awaited time finally came as the doors opened.
The wavy auburn hair which seemed to gleam even when not under the sun; the bright eyes which cannot help but remind someone of aquamarine crystals; the pale skin which accentuated the rosy pink blush and light freckles on her cheeks; the slim fingers which worked cleverly on 514E.
She politely closed the door behind her and walked awkwardly towards me. "You wished to talk to me?"
"Yes," I intertwined my fingers together. "Take a seat."
She took a seat.
"I won't beat around the bush." She gulped as the words pierced through her. "How would you like to start working in Lilith's Laboratory, more specifically, the Biology Department with me."
No amount of masks could hide her surprise. "R-really? Work with you? I'm honoured. But I'm just an intern. How could I be of help to you?"
I repeated what my mentor said to me when I said the same thing: "I've always wanted someone I could pass my expertise and skills to but all I've ever found were those who lacked the talents and motivation. That is, until you, Violette. You have shown me your dedication and talent in this field. I would be the one who will be honoured if you were to allow me to take you under my wing. Concerning your expertise, I am not particularly worried about it. Once you're under me, you'll be supplied with the best utilities and of course the best teacher (me). Now, what do you say, child? Will you allow me to accept you?"
She was left dumbfounded for a moment and finally screamed, "YES! Yes, of course! You are too humble, Dr. Veinar. I would most definitely like to be taken under your wing!"
"You may retire for the evening now," I brushed her off. She practically ran out of the door.
I stood at the entrance of the facility awaiting a black Masserati to take a turn in. I checked my watch and it was already 8. Did he forget? No way. He never does. He said he prepared something special for me so where is he? Is this part of the surprise? If it is, I truly dislike it. When he does come, 我真的会打死他!
At 9.15, I got a call from an unknown number. I accepted the call and brought my phone to my ear. The caller spoke, "Is this Mrs. Chong, wife of Kiran Chong Wei Hao?"
"Yes, I am," the tone of the person on the other side was solemn. Did something happen? "Why?"
"Your husband has been admitted to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He's been in an accident and is currently in critical condition-"
Plack! The sound of my phone hitting the wet floor from the earlier rain bounced off the walls. The voice echoed in my mind. Critical condition. Royal Infirmary Hospital. Accident.
I clasped my hands to my mouth as I choked on humid air, tears streamed down my face. My face felt hot. The world was closing in around me, the lights emitted from the street lamps blurred as my tears clouded my vision. I felt my knees buckle and hit the floor with an ugly splash. My leggings were soaked from the water.
It felt as if it was going to pour again.
