Kimberly wasn't really the kind of person that believes in soul mates. Meeting the one destined for you in this lifetime, it seemed like bullshit to her. Almost silly to think about it really, despite having the countdown clock thing, she refused to believe that it happens to everyone. That is until it happened to her

At 21 years old it happened. The countdown clock appeared on her chest.

The soul mate countdown clock, a countdown clock that suddenly appears on a person's chest, without any kind of indication, 24 hours before they meet their soul mate. It's like a tattoo but only it counts down every minute until it reaches zero and then the soul mates are once again reunited.

8:30 pm

"You have got to be kidding me!" Kim shouted

She looked at her half-naked reflection, saw this "tattoo" on her and instantly felt exasperated.

She sat on her bed and covered her still wet hair with a towel, "shit"

--

23 hours, 36 minutes, 10 seconds

Kim sat on the sofa, TV on and laptop on her chest. She spent the last hour being in denial hoping this countdown clock will disappear but no luck. She decided to call my mom instead, to tell her the news.

"That's wonderful Kimberly!" her mom happily responded, "be sure to be well-dressed when you meet you soul mate okay? And be nice"

"Okay mom, I'll try"

Kim's mom met her dad when she was 23 years. They met at a library. Her mom was busy studying that she forgot about her own countdown clock, until she bumped into Kim's dad that is. They've been inseparable since.

Kim hung up the phone and turned off the TV. She was still on the computer until she fell asleep without realizing it

--

14 hours, 19 minutes, 7 seconds

Kim got a brunch of cereal and pizza because hey, when you're living alone in a small apartment and earning your own money, you get to eat whatever you want.

She sat in front of the TV, staring at the show about redecorating your house, as she took a bite of the Hawaiian pizza that was delivered a few minutes ago. At this point, Kim gave up on being in denial about it instead she became indifferent with the hope that they're not some kind of asshole.

--

5 hours, 21 minutes, 19 seconds

Kim paced around her room

Come to think of it, how will she meet this person? What should she say? Should she give them a gift or something? Or will she just be her dorky self and be like "yo soul mate! It's me, your soul mate! I'm already apologizing that you're stuck with me for the rest of your life"

Yeah, she won't probably say that.

--

1 hour, 9 minutes, 8 seconds

Her mom did say to be nice, so she might as well make herself look decent.

Kim got out of her sweatpants and hoodie and decided to raid her closet to find something that says "yes I am neat and tidy!"

So she went with her signature white button up long sleeve shirt and black jeans, and her converse shoes. She's sure that she's going to wait so might as well wear something that's comfortable

--

10 minutes, 18 seconds

So Kim decided to go outside her apartment and just walk around, maybe get a slurpee. She figured it's awkward that her first meeting with her soul mate was at her house, which was a mess by the way

So she ended up walking around her neighborhood under the cloudy night sky, sipping a big cup of slurpee on a cold night.

--

5 minutes, 56 seconds

Kim threw the slurpee away a while back and yet her hands still feel cold. She can feel her heart beat fast and her stomach jittering. Could she really be excited?

Kim then started to wonder what are the things her and her soul mate would do after they meet? What are their common interests, their differences, their fears and joys. What kind of person are they? And more importantly, what does that person have that made fate say "ah yes, you two will be perfect for each other"

Kim wanted to meet her soul mate, to hold their hand and finally feel complete

--

90 seconds

The one time Kim decided not to bring an umbrella, it rained heavily

And you know what's worse? She happened to be in the part of the neighborhood where there was no waiting sheds so there was nowhere to take shelter from the rain. So Kim decided to just walked back home under the heavy rain. maybe the rain can cleanse away her bad luck 'cause she sure is feeling unlucky right now

--

60 seconds

Kim continued to walk, this time with a bit of speed, on the empty streets lit by bright street lights. It's still raining and she's wet and cold.

30 seconds

Her fast steps were stopped when she heard a little barking sound from the bushes. Kim crouched down and saw a little brown puppy, as drenched as her. She gently reached out and took the playful puppy in her arms

"Hey there little guy" She said as she stared at those bright puppy eyes "what are you doing out here in the rain?"

Kim stood and quickly turned. She was met with dark chocolate brown eyes, looking at her with warmth and welcome. The other girl stood almost as tall as her, wearing sweatpants and a purple hoodie

The two girls stared at each other for a moment until they both felt a warm sensation on their chest

The girls both looked down at their chests. Their countdown clocks showed 0 hours, 0 minutes, 0 seconds in a glowing shade of bright red.

"H-hey I'm Adrianna" she stuttered, not sure what to say next

Kim stared at the girl in front of her and smiled brightly, "I'm Kimberly, and I'm your soul mate"

Adrianna smiled, so bright it could light up the world, and it did, at least it lit up Kim's world

The puppy in Kim's arms started squirming and Adrianna noticed, "Wyatt! there you are!" she exclaimed

It turns out, the puppy was Adrianna's. It got out while Kim was about to pass by Adrianna's house

Kim gently handed the puppy to the girl in front of her

Adrianna reached and gently held her beloved pet, she looked at the other girl and smiled, "Would you like to go inside and get warm?" she asked shyly

"I would love to" Kim answered

Adrianna took Kim's hand and led her inside the house. She offered Kim a hot drink and some dry clothes to change into and they ended up talking the whole night.

Kim met her soul mate outside of her house, in the rain. And she was wearing sweatpants and a hoodie. Funny how fate works, the worse time can actually turn into the perfect time, with the right person.
