Ian watched as Anthony's return to school brought back the lively atmosphere. Anthony's laughter and cheerful presence filled the classroom, dispelling the somber mood that had lingered during his absence.

However, Ian couldn't help but notice Shayne, who sat alone at the back of the class, appearing distant and preoccupied. It left Ian wondering about any potential issues between Shayne and Anthony.

Despite Shayne's isolation, Ian found comfort in Anthony's return. It restored a sense of normalcy and happiness to the school environment that had been missing. As the teacher walked in, Ian whispered softly to himself , "Things are just better when he's around."

As they headed to the next class, Ian discreetly followed behind Anthony's group, simply wanting to be close to him. However, his hopes were dashed when an unfamiliar girl, who didn't seem like a student from their school, inserted herself between Anthony's arms. Ian stopped in his tracks, his heart sinking, and decided against following them any further.

Suddenly, someone hugged Ian from behind, and he realized it was Mari. He had no option but to force a smile to mask the turmoil inside. Mari, unaware of Ian's inner conflict, exclaimed, "Look who's here!" Ian responded with a feigned smile, saying, "Hey, Mari, I missed you."

They continued walking together to their next class, but as they did, Shayne bumped into Ian with his shoulder while moving at a brisk pace. Mari reacted with shock, exclaiming, "Omg, Shayne, what the heck?" However, Shayne seemed indifferent and continued on alone.

Trying to reassure Mari, Ian said, "It's okay, Mari. I'm sure it was an accident." As they proceeded to class, Ian couldn't help but wonder what's wrong with Shayne.

During the lunch break, Ian was eating his sandwich on the empty rooftop, taking in the view of Sacramento. Suddenly, he heard his name from behind. Turning around, he was surprised to find Shayne approaching. Ian felt a pang of unease, uncertain about Shayne's intentions. What if he wanted to confront him or start a fight? Despite his apprehension, Ian managed to force a small smile and said, "Hey, why are you here?"

Shayne walked over and, to Ian's relief, sat down next to him. The atmosphere was tense, and Ian couldn't help but wonder why Shayne had sought him out.

Minutes passed in silence as Shayne remained fixated on the sky. Ian continued to eat his sandwich, feeling the peculiar atmosphere that had settled between them. It was strange sitting next to Shayne, especially considering that they haven't talked in years despite their childhood best friends . Ian couldn't help but feel a sense of regret, thinking that he had somehow let Shayne down.

"Ian, we're still friends, right?" Shayne finally broke the silence, his voice carrying a touch of concern.

Ian, unsure of Shayne's motives, replied cautiously, "Yes, Shayne, why do you ask?"

"You have to believe that I want nothing but the best for you as an old friend," Shayne continued, his words loaded with sincerity.

Ian tensed, not sure where this conversation was heading. "Okay," he replied, still puzzled.

Shayne's next words sent a shiver down Ian's spine. "Anthony is using you. He's not your friend. And he doesn't see you as one."

Ian was taken aback. "What are you talking about?" he replied, trying to sound sarcastic to deflect the seriousness of the conversation.

"He's just using you, Ian," Shayne insisted. "He's up to no good. I know you have a crush on him, or whatever, but you need to move on. Stop hanging around with him."
