Stripped of his dignity

Paige and Imelda had left poor Anthony so well tied up on the ground with a length of jump rope (nicked from Imelda's Dad's garage) that he was unable to make any progress in freeing himself. Then his older sister, 16-year-old Adèle, happened to be walking down the path next to the wooded area at about 2.30pm on that Tuesday afternoon. By that stage, Anthony had lain there unable to move very far for a full hour.

When Adèle found him attempting to squirm around in his bonds, she wanted to know who had done this to him - but he wouldn't say, and then he started crying. Even though Anthony was her younger brother she knew this kind of thing shouldn't be happening to a 14-year-old boy. It mortified her that, when he should be on his way to becoming a man, her brother was such a... you know, wimp! Maybe he'd never become manly in his whole life! That was a preoccupation of hers.

Adèle wanted to feel more sympathetic, but really, she felt that whoever had done this, Anthony could surely have stopped them from tying him up in this way if he'd really wanted to? She felt such despair that this had happened to Anthony. And, Anthony was refusing to tell her who was responsible. But then something occurred to her.

"Wait, this isn't Paige and Imelda again, is it?"

Anthony looked up at her, not knowing what to say.

Adèle: "Oh my god, two GIRLS did this to you? I mean, I know you gave them money before, but this? You're really being physically bullied by... girls?"

Anthony: "I know, I'm sorry. Please help me? I can't get out of this."

Pathetic, Adèle thought to herself, before blurting out: "Well, if you can't get out of that yourself, then I'm not going to help you."

While Anthony was stunned, Adèle was also a bit surprised at her own meanness. But even on further reflection, she decided to stick to her guns.

"I'll see you at home," Adèle said as she turned on her heel and began to head for home without even untying a single knot to help Anthony towards getting out of his unfortunate predicament.

"Adèle! Please! Don't go now!", Anthony pleaded.

"You'll just have to try harder," Adèle shouted back over her shoulder, as she walked off.

Adèle struggles to have sympathy for her younger brother Anthony

It took Anthony another full hour-and-a-half to free himself, throw away the jump rope, recover his backpack that had been thrown up in a tree and scramble home in the pouring rain. As the two bullies had taken his jacket, he was soaked through by the time he got home and utterly miserable.

As it was only 4pm his parents didn't really notice he was late so they left him to run up to his room. But Adèle knocked on his door soon after he got home.

"Yeah?"

"It's me," said Adèle, "can I come in?"

"Yeah."
