Before you read further, I just want you to know that this chapter contains some medical-related information. I got most of it from Google since I’m not exactly an expert in the medical field yet, so if anything’s off, cut me some slack.
"Now’s not the time for regrets, Ma-ri. If we want to get out of here, we need to wake him up first."
Ma-ri clenched her fists, forcing herself to snap out of it. She wiped away the tears clouding her vision and stood up.
"Lay him flat on the floor."
"What?" The others stared at her like she’d lost her mind.
"Just do it. It’s not rocket science, guys." Her voice wavered between urgency and frustration.
Jaehyun hesitated for only a second before kneeling down and carefully laying Taesan’s unconscious body flat.
"Now, lift his legs."
That earned her a round of incredulous looks.
"Ma-ri, are you serious?" Jaehyun shot her a wary glance.
"trust me please , We don’t have time for doubts." She urged.
Reluctantly, Jaehyun followed her instructions, lifting Taesan’s legs into the air.
Seconds dragged by. Then a minute.
Nothing.
The weight of silence pressed down on them.
"I don’t think this is working. We should try something el—"
Leehan’s words were cut off by the faintest sound of movement.
Their heads snapped towards Taesan. His fingers twitched. Then, his body stirred.
Relief crashed over them like a tidal wave.
Ma-ri wasted no time. As Taesan tried to push himself up, she was already there, gently but firmly holding him down.
"Not yet," she said, her voice soft, "You need to stay still for a while."
After a few seconds, she turned to Leehan. "Do you have any candy? Something sweet?"
Leehan blinked at her, caught off guard. "Huh?"
"Just check your pockets,"
Still confused, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small pack of gummies.
Ma-ri snatched them from his hands and carefully fed a few to Taesan, watching for a reaction.
His breathing evened out, and the color slowly returned to his face. It wasn’t much, but it was enough.
Once she was sure he was stable, she let go. "Alright. You can sit up now."
Taesan still looked out of it, his eyes unfocused.
"How do you feel?" Ma-ri asked.
He opened his mouth, but his throat was too dry to form words.
Understanding, Ma-ri gave him a small pat on the back. "It’s okay. Just take your time."
A few moments passed before she turned to the others. "We need to move. Now that Taesan’s awake, we can’t waste any more time."
Taesan’s gaze flickered to her, catching the small, relieved smile on her face.
For a moment, it was like the years between them never happened. His heart clenched, but he didn’t let it show. Instead, he forced a weak, almost invisible smile in return—a quiet reassurance that he was okay.
"Let’s go," Leehan said, stepping forward to help Taesan up.
But just as they turned, a voice rang out, stopping them in their tracks.
"Enough with the drama, kids."
Ma-ri’s blood ran cold.
That voice.
Her breath hitched, her hands instinctively curling into fists.
She didn’t need to look to know who it was.
“What did I tell you about entertaining that pathetic crush of yours, Ma-ri?” Yoon sneered, his tone mocking, “And now, you’re all here, playing heroes. How cute.”
Ma-ri felt like the ground had been ripped out from under her.
"Did you really think you could escape me that easily?"
His laughter sent a sickening shiver through the air.
No one moved. No one even breathed.
“No more games,” he said, raising the weapon and aiming it directly at Taesan’s head.
Ma-ri’s world seemed to crumble around her as the words escaped his lips:
