"Five..."

You should kiss him.

"Four..."

Everyone kisses on New Years.

"Three..."

Maybe he'll enjoy it.

"Two..."

Just go for it, Dan.

"One! Happy New Years!"

Dan didn't have time to think as he pulled Phil in for a kiss. Well, he had five seconds to think, and five seconds was not a very good amount of time to make a counterargument. He just went in for the kill and kissed him as if they weren't "just friends".

But you'd have to be blind to think Dan and Phil were just friends. Their chemistry was wild and hard to miss and all their friends had commented on it at one point or another. There was nothing their friends shipped more than Dan and Phil.

Dan listened as people cheered around them, but the one thing he was most focused on was the beating of his heart, hard as coal in his chest, thumping and threatening to burst while Phil actually kissed him back. It was a brand new year, and the first moments of this year were him and Phil sharing their first kiss. It was seemingly perfect, and nothing was going to mess this up. Nothing and no one.

When they finally pulled away, Dan realized everyone had already stopped their festivities and were now staring directly at the two boys. For a few moments, everything was silent and uncomfortable, until PJ finally spoke up,

"About bloody time."

That triggered a wave of applause and excited cheering, putting a warm blush on both Dan and Phil's faces. Dan couldn't believe it. Not only did Dan just kiss the man he'd been pining after for years, but he was also being applauded for it by his friends?

"We definitely need to talk about this," Dan heard Phil murmur in his ear.

"Yup." Dan agreed, smiling.

Later that evening, when everyone had either left or was too drunk to care, Dan and Phil slipped into another room to have a chat. They had been almost avoiding eachother all night, and now they could finally have the much-needed feelings conversation.

Yippee.

Dan started talking the minute the door was closed, pushing it all out in one breath. "Look, I know that kiss was incredibly awkward and I definitely shouldn't have done it because you probably only think of me as a friend but I just want you to know that it was amazing for me and I feel more for you than I ever have for anyone."

Phil was noticeably taken aback at Dan's sudden confession, but nodded slowly. "Dan, I liked it too. A lot, actually. I, um... I wanted to tell you that I've been interested in you for a while now, I just didn't know how to say it." When Phil realized Dan was just staring silently, he continued. "And honestly I think I've always loved you, I just didn't realize it was a romantic type of love until maybe last year. I, um..." He paused and searched Dan's face for any emotion, but all that was there was shock and slight disbelief. "I think it's your turn."

"Oh, right! Uh... Okay, I kissed you tonight, and I honestly thought things were going to be awkward after that. I'm really glad it isn't, because I don't want to lose you or anything. So, I think we should be more than friends. I'm not very good at this stuff." Dan laughed awkwardly and ran a hand through his fringe. His heart was beating a mile a minute and he felt like he could faint at any minute.

"I think so, too." Phil said, smiling shyly at Dan.

Dan felt like he was flying. "So does that make it official? You and I are dating?" He asked, his smile playful and happy.

"If you want us to be, then yes."
With that, Dan leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to Phil's lips. This kiss was less confused, less surprising. It wasn't perfect, nothing was, but if something on Earth was close to it, it was that kiss.

They soon pulled away for air and smiled.

"Happy New Year, Phil."

"Happy New Year, Dan."
